Disney+ Adds New Option To Disable Unrated Live Sports & News
This year, Disney+ has gone through some major upgrades in the United States, with the launch of Hulu On Disney+, live channels and most recently, the addition of ESPN On Disney+.
With more live content now becoming available on Disney+, such as news from ABC News Live and sports from ESPN, Disney has added some new settings to help filter out some content for profiles that might want to see this, especially since these don’t come with the same rating system as pre-recorded content and could feature adverts with adult themes, products and services.
Users can now select the option to disable titles without ratings, which includes live sports and news. This could be useful for a number of users, such as parents who don’t want their kids watching news or sports, or for subscribers who aren’t interested in this content.
Turning off the “Allow titles without ratings like live sports, news, and more” setting will prevent users under that profile from viewing any unrated content while streaming on Disney+. Please note live content and live ads may feature adult themes, products and services.
Keep in mind that the Allow titles without ratings like live sports, news, and more setting is turned on by default*, unless the profile is in Junior Mode. The setting can be enabled* or disabled at any time for each profile on your Disney+ account.
To turn this setting off or back on, follow the steps below:
- Navigate to your profiles and select Edit Profiles
- Select your profile
- Under “Parental Controls,” find the setting “Allow titles without ratings like live sports, news, and more” and switch it to OFF or ON
- Please note that if you want to switch the setting ON, you will be prompted to enter your account password.
Disney has also stated that programs outside these categories (for example, programs with content ratings and some other programs without ratings) will still adhere to the content ratings and maturity settings of your profile.
By keeping this setting enabled, subscribers consent to have access to content and advertising of all types, including mature categories.
Roger’s Take: Better parental controls and more user options are always good options for Disney+ subscribers since they give more power and choice. Disney+ still has a long way to go until its parental controls and homepage are on the same page as many other streaming services. I do think having the option to turn off live channels or sports is useful, since not everyone is interested in these. Hopefully, as Disney+ evolves, the homepage will continue to adapt to each user’s preference.
