“Descendants: The Rise Of Rise” Becomes Disney+’s Most Watched Live-Action Original Movie Since ‘Hocus Pocus 2’
Earlier this summer, Disney released the latest instalment in the “Descendants” franchise, called “Descendants: The Rise Of Rise” on Disney+ around the world.
The film tells the story of Uma, who is now the Headmaster of Auradon Prep, extending an invite to the school to another VK – Red, the rebellious daughter of the tyrannical Queen of Hearts from Wonderland. The Queen of Hearts has long held a grudge against Auradon, especially against Cinderella, and seizes the opportunity to seek revenge when she drops her daughter off at school. When the Queen of Hearts incites a coup against Auradon, Red must team up with Cinderella’s perfectionist daughter Chloe as they travel back in time to try to undo the traumatic event that set the young Queen of Hearts down her villainous path.
“Descendants: The Rise of Red” stars Brandy, Rita Ora, Kylie Cantrall, Malia Baker, China Anne McClain, Jeremy Swift, Dara Reneé, Ruby Rose Turner, Morgan Dudley, Paolo Montalban, Melanie Paxson, Leonardo Nam, Joshua Colley and Peder Lindell.
The Wrap has revealed that “Descendants: The Rise Of Rise” has become Disney+’s most-watched live-action original movie since Hocus Pocus 2, pulling in 33 million viewers over the first 12 weeks of availability on Disney+. However, it’s important to note that since Hocus Pocus 2, there haven’t been that many original live-action movies released directly onto Disney+ as the company shifts back to a theatrical-first business model.
Disney has previously revealed that “Descendants: The Rise Of Rise” pulled in 6.7 million views within the first three days of release and, according to Nielsen, was the fifth most-watched film on any streaming service in that initial week.
Roger’s Take: There’s little doubt that “Descendants: The Rise Of Rise” has been a huge success for Disney, especially since this would have likely been a cheap film to make and it has delivered so many viewers on Disney+. No doubt, we are going to see more movies like this released in the future, since they fit perfectly in with the traditional Disney Channel musical vibe.
“Descendants: The Rise of Red” is out now on Disney+.
