Disney has announced that the National Geographic documentary series, “Cursed Gold: A Shipwreck Scandal” is going to be coming to Disney+ and Hulu on Thursday 22nd August 2024.

From BBC Studios and based on a New York Times bestseller, “Cursed Gold: A Shipwreck Scandal” tells the true story of maverick scientist Tommy Thompson and his resourceful team who stunned the world in 1989 by recovering three tons of gold from the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean from the famous 1857 shipwreck, SS Central America. The three-part series follows the 30-year story of adventure, deception and personal turmoil that takes Tommy from celebrated explorer to infamous fugitive and, ultimately, lands him in a prison cell.

The series consists of three episodes:

  • Impossible Riches – A maverick scientist assembles a renegade team of experts to attempt the seemingly impossible salvaging a gold-laden shipwreck from the deep ocean.
  • Follow the Money – Tommys discovery makes him an American hero. But his fortunes change as lawyers lay claim to the newfound gold, leaving his investors empty-handed.
  • The Manhunt – Tommy Thompson fails to appear in court, and the search begins.

No international Disney+ release for this series has been announced yet.
