Disney is currently developing a new live-action remake of its classic animated film, “Lilo & Stitch” for Disney+, which will star Zach Galifianakis (The Hangover), Billy Magnussen (Aladdin), Sydney Elizebeth Agudong (NCIS), Kahiau Machado, Jolene Purdy, and newcomer Maia Kealoha as the title character, Lilo.

In the original film, which was released in 2002 and told the story of Stitch, a runaway genetic experiment from a faraway planet, who crash lands on Earth and as he wreaks havoc on the Hawaiian Islands, he becomes the mischievous adopted alien “puppy” of an independent little girl named Lilo, and together they learn about loyalty, friendship and ‘ohana, the Hawaiian tradition of the family.

Deadline has revealed that Emmy and Tony Award winner Courtney B. Vance has joined the cast and will be playing the role of of Cobra Bubbles,  who is a former CIA agent who has become a social worker, and is assigned to Nani’s house in order to determine her suitability to be the guardian for Lilo, her little sister.

Courtney B. Vance has previously starred in “Genius: Athena”, “Lovecraft Country” and “The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story”.

The new live-action version is going to be directed by Dean Fleischer Camp, who has previously directed the Oscar-nominated film, “Marcel the Shell with Shoes On”. The script has been written by Chris Kekaniokalani Bright, who is working on a previous draft by Mike Van Waes.

No release date has yet been announced for “Lilo & Stitch”, but in the meantime, you can watch the original animated film on Disney+ now.
