Colman Domingo & Hudson Thames To Star In “Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man”
Last this year, Marvel Animation is releasing a brand new Spider-Man series on Disney+ called “Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man”, which follows Peter Parker on his way to becoming Spider-Man in the MCU, starting with his freshman year of high school of course. Peter’s journey in the series will be unlike we’ve ever seen and a style that celebrates the character’s early comic book roots.
Other characters appearing in the upcoming series include Nico Minoru, Lonnie Lincoln, Amadeus Cho, Harry Osborn, Pearl Pangan, and Jean Foucault. The upcoming series will see Charlie Cox, once again reprising his role as Matt Murdock/Daredevil and Vincent D’Onofrio as the Kingpin.
There will be plenty of classic villains in the series including Unicorn, Chameleon, Scorpion, Speed Demon, Tarantula, the Rhino, Butane, Carmela Black, and Otto Octavius.
The head writer and executive producer on the show, Jeff Trammell, took part in the Marvel Animation panel at the D23: Ultimate Fan Event over the weekend in Anaheim, California. During this panel some more details about the show were revealed, including announcing that Hudson Thames will be playing Peter Parker/Spider-Man, and Colman Domingo will play Norman Osborn in the upcoming series, before both actors joined him on stage.
Hudson Thames previously provided the voice of Peter Parker/Spider-Man in the animated series, “What If?” and Colman Domingo has previously provided the voice of Unicron in “Tranformers: Rise Of The Beasts”.
While this series was originally going to be set prior to the events of “Captain America: Civil War”, which is when Spider-Man first appeared in the MCU. This series is also taking place in an alternative multiverse, so they’ve got a little more freedom to do things a little differently.
As part of the panel, fans in attendance got to see a clip from the upcoming series, which showed how Doctor Strange (played by Benedict Cumberbatch, comes through a portal, along with a horned symbiote.
The attendees also got to see the moment where Peter is bitten by the spider that gives him his powers before jumping forward to reveal that Norman Osborn will be playing the role of a mentor to Peter Parker, helping him as his “guy in the chair”, rather than being mentored by Tony Stark.
No official release date for the upcoming series has been announced, but hopefully, we will soon have some more details.
Roger’s Take: The “Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man” series does feel a little odd and kinda sums up some of the problems with the latest projects, where it feels like too many ideas were being floated around about potential Disney+ series without much thought how all this is going to work. Making this series take place in a completely different universe from the MCU is probably a good thing, gives it room to grow and do its own thing. However, incorporating characters and actors from the MCU will likely just confuse audiences. It might be ok, but I’m really hoping after “Avengers: Secret Wars”, the multiverse side of Marvel is put on the back burner.
