20th Television and Searchlight TV are currently developing a pilot for a reboot/revival of the popular series, “Buffy The Vampire Slayer” for Hulu and Disney+.

The franchise chronicles the adventures of Buffy Summers, a teenage girl who is gifted with the strength and skill to hunt vampires.   “Buffy The Vampire Slayer” debuted in 1992 with a film starring Kristy Swanson, Donald Sutherland, and Luke Perry. It returned in 1997 with a TV series starring Sarah Michelle Gellar and Alyson Hannigan, which ran for seven seasons.

The new series will continue the story, with Sarah Michelle Gellar returning as the Vampire hunter. However, the new series will primarily follow a new vampire slayer, who will be played by Ryan Kiera Armstrong, who recently starred in the Disney+ Original series, “Star Wars: Skeleton Crew”.  She has also starred in “American Horror Story: Red Tide”, “Black Widow” and “The Tomorrow War”.

No character details have been revealed, but the casting was revealed online by Sarah Michelle Gellar, who shared a video of her telling Ryan that she’s been cast in the role:

“From the moment I saw Ryan’s audition, I knew there was only one girl that I wanted by my side. To have that kind of emotional intelligence, and talent, at such a young age is truly a gift. The bonus is that her smile lights up even the darkest room. We are so overjoyed to have found this generation’s slayer in Ryan Kiera Armstrong, she absolutely blew us away — there is no question in our mind that she is the chosen one”.

Ryan responded to the casting news, crying in response to this news.

“I’m so honored, thank you for trusting me”

The new series will continue the story, with Sarah Michelle Gellar expected to return as the Vampire hunter. However, the new series will primarily follow a new slayer.  This new follow-on series will be directed by Chloé Zhao, who previously directed the Oscar-winning “Nomadland” and the Marvel film “Eternals.” Chloé has a first-look deal with Searchlight. The pilot will be written by Nora and Lilla Zuckerman, who previously worked on “Poker Face.”

With the project still in the early stages of development, we don’t know when this series will be filmed and released.

The “Buffy The Vampire Slayer” series is available to stream on Hulu and Hulu On Disney+ in the United States and on Disney+ internationally, along with the original film.

Roger’s Take: Having seen Ryan in the new “Skeleton Crew” series, I’ve no doubt that she’s got the talent to deliver a fantastic performance, though Disney will need to crack on and get this show not only made, but with multiple seasons as she’s growing up fast!
