Disney+ is releasing a brand new musical, “Better Nate Than Ever” on April 1st, which tells the story of 13-year-old Nate Foster, who has big Broadway dreams. There’s only one problem — he can’t even land a part in the school play. But when his parents leave town, Nate and his best friend Libby sneak off to the Big Apple for a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to prove everyone wrong. A chance encounter with Nate’s long-lost Aunt Heidi turns his journey upside-down, and together they must learn that life’s greatest adventures are only as big as your dreams. Based on the award-winning novel.

Disney held a special premiere event at the El Capitan theatre in Los Angels and also the social media embargo has lifted, meaning critics have been able to share their early thoughts on the film, ahead of its release.

Here are a few of the initial responses to the film, including my own:

#BetterNateThanEver is a great new musical film with fantastic performances, especially from Rueby Wood, who plays Nate, an awkward theatre kid who follows his dream. I really enjoyed it. Funny & Heartwarming Another superb addition to #disneyplus. It’s Coming Out On April 1st pic.twitter.com/dHvB0x61ne

#BetterNateThanEver is a fun enjoyable film from D+! If you’re a fan of Broadway & NYC this film is a love letter to that community. The entire cast is good but it’s Rueby Wood who shines the most as Nate. Definitely recommend checking this one out! pic.twitter.com/BEYJXLKD42

#BetterNateThanEver is a joy! Rueby Wood’s optimism is infectious. Not Tim Federle making me cry with emotional high notes – literally and figuratively. I hope every kid out there finds their light and their people. Another beautiful example of supportive friendship goals. pic.twitter.com/eO4gBna4tG

BETTER NATE THAN EVER is a gorgeous little gem that will speak to the soul of every theatre kid. A charming love letter to Broadway and the kids who dream of seeing their name in lights. Rueby Wood knocks it out of the park. #BetterNateThanEver pic.twitter.com/nhW4r5H7D9
