Best Halloween Specials On Disney+ (2023)
Now that we’re in the month of October, it’s also time for the spooky season. Let’s take a look at some of the best spooky and scary shorts and specials available on Disney+.
MICKEY AND FRIENDS: TRICK OR TREATS
In this new Halloween stop-motion special, Mickey, Minnie, Goofy, Donald and Daisy are trick-or-treating when Donald spies the spookiest mansion he’s ever seen and assumes it has the best treats. After he convinces his friends to risk a visit, the owner, Witch Hazel, casts a spell that turns them into their costumes. The special features new original music from Emmy Award-nominated songwriter Beau Black (“The Lion Guard”).
MUPPETS HAUNTED MANSION
On Halloween night, Gonzo is challenged to spend one night in The Haunted Mansion.
This is my favorite version of “The Haunted Mansion,” granted I haven’t seen the 2023 version yet. However, anything with the muppets will get me to watch it, at least, once. This version has had me watch it each of the last few Halloween seasons.
MICKEY’S TALE OF TWO WITCHES
On Halloween, Mickey tells Pluto a story about two witches-in-training, Minnie the Wonderful and Daisy Doozy, who must pass four tests to graduate from the Witch Academy in Happy Haunt Hills.
This is a cute special perfect for children. While the focus on Minnie and Daisy certainly makes it more appealing for girls, there’s still a lot in here for boys to love as well.
THE SCARIEST STORY EVER: A MICKEY MOUSE HALLOWEEN SPOOKTACULAR
At the end of Halloween night, Mickey attempts to cap off the evening by telling his and Donald’s nephews the scariest story ever.
This is another cute special for kids. Mickey, Donald and Goofy all take their turns trying to scare Donald’s nephews but it comes in the funniest way possible.
DISNEY CHANNEL HALLOWEEN HOUSE PARTY
Celebrate Halloween with the stars of Disney Channel. A monster under the bed, a haunted house, an ancient curse, and more ghostly surprises await in this family-friendly sketch comedy special.
This is a cute special for kids, especially if they might enjoy mid 2010s Disney Channel content.
TOY STORY OF TERROR
Woody and the gang are held up at a roadside motel and members of the group start to disappear from everywhere. Woody and set about getting to the bottom of the mystery.
This is one of the best ways to continue the “Toy Story” franchise that has brought joy to millions. Special presentations like this can continue the story a little better than the films at this point.
GROWING FANGS
A teenage girl struggling to hide her identity as a vampire from her human best friend, starts a new school for vampires. She soon realizes it’s not as easy to fit in with students there as she thought.
FRANKENWEENIE
A young boy sets out to revive his dead pet using the monstrous power of science.
While not as popular as the Tim Burton film that would come later, this special short hits the high points from the story of the dog brought back to life like Frankenstein’s monster.
TRICK OR TREAT
When the nephews come to Donald’s house in their Halloween costumes he dumps water on them and laughs at his trick. A witch sees this and decides to help the kids. By magic she gives Donald a bad time and the kids finally get their treats.
This classic Disney animated short is one of the genuinely funniest shorts featuring Donald Duck I’ve ever seen.
LONESOME GHOSTS
Mickey, Donald and Goofy run the “Ajax Ghost Exterminators” agency. They receive a call from lonely and bored ghosts to come to their house where they are scared silly by the hilarious haunts and taunts of these spirited pranksters.
Another fun classic animated short from Disney, this has some of the similar vibes as “Scooby-Doo Meets the Boo Brothers.”
MATER AND THE GHOSTLIGHT
In this short featuring the characters of the movie Cars, Mater is told the story of a Ghostlight, which causes him to be scared.
This is a fun short taking fans of the “Cars” franchise back to Radiator Springs. Mater is a fun protagonist that drives the story really well, pun intended.
DESCENDANTS: ROYAL WEDDING
Happily-ever-after continues for Auradon’s power couple, Mal and Ben, as they prepare to say “I do” at an epic celebration with their friends and family, but Hades threatens to ruin it all.
Despite not having seen the “Descendants” franchise, this one was really cute, and I can see how “Descendants” fans would like this one.
THE LEGEND OF MOR’DU
The witch from Pixar’s Brave uses magical illustrations to tell the legend of a power-obsessed prince who sought a magic spell that would allow him to wrest control of a kingdom from his brothers, only to destroy that kingdom and his own fate as well.
HOCUS POCUS 25TH ANNIVERSARY HALLOWEN BASH
Fans, cast members, and celebrities alike gather at Hollywood Forever Cemetery to commemorate the 25th Anniversary of Disney’s Hocus Pocus and its long-lasting impact.
Even though this year marks the 30 year anniversary for “Hocus Pocus,” this is still a fun special for fans of the cult classic film.
Z-O-M-B-I-E-S ADDISON’S MOONSTONE MYSTERY
Zed and Addison work together to save Seabrook High’s Halloween Fall Ball when Monster Shrimpy begins terrorizing the school.
Fans of the “Z-O-M-B-I-E-S” series will probably enjoy this animated special similar to the “Descendants Royal Wedding” special.
This is not a ranking, just a list of some of the fun Halloween shorts and specials available on Disney+. Which one are you excited to check out for the first time? Which ones are yearly favorites?
