Arnold Schwarzenegger Returning For “King Conan”
Disney continues to mine the 20th Century Studios vault, as the studio is now developing a brand-new film based on the iconic “Conan the Barbarian” franchise, with Arnold Schwarzenegger returning.
The first movie came out in 1982 and was released internationally by 20th Century Fox. It starred Arnold in the title role and is based on the pages of Weird Tales magazine by Robert E. Howard. A second film was released in 1984 called “Conan the Destroyer”, with a reboot starring Jason Momoa launching in 2011.
According to Deadline, Christopher McQuarrie has joined the project to write and direct the upcoming movie called “King Conan”. Christopher has previously worked on the “Mission Impossible” and “Jack Reacher” films.
The news was revealed this past weekend by Arnold Schwarzenegger at his Arnold Sports Festival in Columbus, Ohio, saying:
“With King Conan, it’s a great old story that Conan was forty years as King, and now he gets forced out of the kingdom, and there’s conflict, of course, but somehow he comes back, and there’s all kinds of madness, violence, magic, and creatures and stuff like that”.
As with any project in development, this film might not necessarily happen, but if it does, expect it to be released in cinemas first, before hitting Hulu/Disney+.
The original “Conan The Barbarian” film is available to stream now on Disney+ in many countries around the world.
Roger’s Take: After so many years, it’ll be interesting to see if this project comes to anything. With a reboot of the franchise over a decade ago, it might be a good time to try reintroducing this character to a new generation, though personally I’m not 100% sure this will work, but its great to see 20th Century Studios trying something a little different.
