Just ahead of the season finale, Disney has announced that it has renewed “American Idol” for an eighth season by ABC, though it’s going to be the twenty-third season overall.

“American Idol,” the iconic series that revolutionized the television landscape by pioneering the music competition genre, returns to airwaves for season seven on ABC. Helping determine who America will ultimately vote to become the next singing sensation are music industry forces and superstar judges Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie. Emmy Award-winning host and producer Ryan Seacrest hosts the beloved competition series.

Recently, it was revealed that Katy Perry would be leaving the show as a judge after the current season ends, though no official announcement has been made yet for her replacement.

“American Idol” is produced by Fremantle and 19 Entertainment, a part of Sony Pictures Television. Executive producers include Megan Michaels Wolflick, who also serves as showrunner, and Fremantle’s Jennifer Mullin, with Eli Holzman and Aaron Saidman serving as executive producers for 19 Entertainment.

The series is released in the United States on ABC, Hulu and Hulu On Disney+. However, Fremantle distributes the series worldwide, which is why it’s not available on Disney+ internationally.

Roger’s POV: It’s not a huge surprise to see ABC bringing back “American Idol” for another season. The ratings have still been good enough to warrant making the show, plus they also love to do some corporate synergy by tying in trips to Disney’s Aulani resort and having “Disney” theme nights.
