Disney has announced that ABC is going to show the very first episode of the Disney+ Original series, “American Born Chinese”, on the ABC linear channel on Saturday, June 24th 2023, at 8:00 p.m.  Only the first episode, called “What Guy Are You,” will be shown, as this is a way to promote the show to viewers on the linear network to sign up for Disney+ to watch the rest of the series.   Though it’s a shame the entire series isn’t going to be shown on ABC, to get more viewers and also provide additional scripted drama series while the writer’s strike is ongoing.

A series adaptation of Gene Luen Yang’s groundbreaking graphic novel, “American Born Chinese”, is the story of Jin Wang, a regular American teenager whose hopes for “leveling up” his social life are derailed with the arrival of a new foreign student, Wei-Chen Sun. Dealing with high school politics, a racist viral meme from a 90s television show, and this eccentric new boy following him around, Jin fumbles his chance of getting on the soccer team and tarnishes his reputation. However, as Jin gets to know Wei-Chen, he comes to find out that this new kid is the son of the legendary Monkey King, Sun Wukong, from Chinese myth. As Wei-Chen enlists Jin in his search for the rumored Fourth Scroll, Jin is faced with the trials and tribulations of heaven and high school, forcing him to discover his own identity in the process. Told through family, comedy, and action-packed Kung-Fu, Jin learns that his power comes from being himself.

The coming-of-age adventure features an all-star international cast, including Academy Award winners Michelle Yeoh and Ke Huy Quan (“Everything Everywhere All at Once”), Ben Wang (“Chang Can Dunk”), International Emmy Award Nominee Yeo Yann Yann (“Wet Season”), Chin Han (“Mortal Kombat”), Daniel Wu (“Reminiscence”), former Taekwondo champion Jimmy Liu and Sydney Taylor (“Just Add Magic”).

Introducing audiences to a pantheon of iconic Chinese mythical characters, are guest stars Academy Award nominee Stephanie Hsu as Shiji Niangniang, the Goddess of Stones; Ronny Chieng as unconventional monk, Ji Gong; Jimmy O. Yang as Dragon King, Ao Guang; James Hong as Jade Emperor; Leonard Wu as Niu Mowang/Bull Demon; and Poppy Liu as Princess Iron Fan. The series also welcomes Lisa Lu as soon-to-be retired acupuncturist Ni Yang and Rosalie Chiang as student activist Suzy Nakamura.
