20th Television has been developing a new half-hour comedy series called “Josep” for a while, but just ahead of Disney’s Upfront advertisers event next week, it has been revealed that ABC has passed on the project.

“Josep” was going to star Jo Koy, who has an overall deal with 20th Television and followed the comedian as a recently divorced Filipino American nurse attempting to navigate dating, fatherhood and a very Filipino mother who loves to “help.”

The feedback to the pilot was that while it had some funny moments, it didn’t quite deliver as a whole.

There are hopes that they might be able to redevelop the idea but according to Deadline, it’s apparently it’s too early to say whether that will happen but executives are still eager to get a show featuring Jo Koy onto the network.

The pilot was created by Steve Joe, who is a co-executive producer on the Disney+ Original, “Doogie Kamealoha MD”. Along with “Fresh Off The Boat’s” Randall Park and Michael Golamco, who are also executive producers and are writing the half-hour comedy.

Other executive producers include Kourtney Kang, Jake Kasdan, Melvin Mar, Hieu Ho. Jo Koy and his manager Joe Meloche, will also be executive producers on the comedy series.

What do you think of ABC passing on this pilot?

I'm so disappointed to hear about this. I'm part-Filipino, my mom is Filipino and I feel like, if this show had gone forward, it could have opened up good representation for the Filipino community and be somewhat therapeutic for others too.
