Disney Renews “Coven Academy” For A Second Season
Earlier this month, just in time for Halloween, Disney released a brand new teen-supernatural drama series called “Coven Academy” on Disney+, Hulu and Freeform.
The show is set in the haunted heart of New Orleans. “Coven Academy” follows three teenage witches and their dangerously charming warlock peers at an elite magic boarding school where power is currency, secrets are lethal, and attraction is a liability. Caught between ancient supernatural wars and forbidden love interests, the coven must decide how far they’re willing to go to protect their city – and themselves.
This series was a huge success straight out of the gate, as it pulled in 20.3 million global hours in its first three weeks on Disney+ and Hulu. The first episode also pulled in an additional 30 million views on TikTok, Instagram and YouTube. “Coven Academy” was the most popular show among streaming series among teens 12–17 and in the top five among all viewers based by views.
That initial success means Disney has already decided to give the show a season two renewal, which is perfect timing ahead of Halloween to get some additional viewing from people potentially holding out to see if the show was cancelled.
“Coven Academy” stars Malina Pauli Weissman (“A Series of Unfortunate Events”) as Briar, a fiercely independent New Yorker who discovers she’s a witch; Malachi Barton (“Camp Rock 3,” “Zombies 4: Dawn of the Vampires”) as Jake, a magnetic warlock with a dangerous edge; Jordan Leftwich (“The Family Switch”) as Sasha, a deeply empathic student who can read minds; Ora Duplass (“Their Town”) as Tegan, an irreverent time-bending witch; Louis Thresher (“Boarders”) as Ollie, a hungry, newly turned vampire; and Tiffani Thiessen (“White Collar,” “90210”) as Miss Graves, the formidable and glamorous head of the school. The series also features special guest star Devon Sawa (“Hacks”) as Mr. Cole, a brilliant and charismatic warlock professor.
Tim Federle (“High School Musical: The Musical: The Series,” the upcoming “Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion” sequel) created “Coven Academy” and serves as executive producer alongside Darren Swimmer, Todd Slavkin, Amanda Row and Bronwyn North-Reist. “Coven Academy” is produced by Federle’s Chorus Boy Productions in association with Disney Kids & Family.
Unfortunately, no other details on when production on the second season will begin or whether it will be able to go into production to reach our screens before next Halloween.
Disney has been searching for a new teen drama to capture the hearts of its viewers and it looks like “Coven Academy” has managed to do that. Originally, it was just going to be a Disney+ exclusive show, but they shifted plans to include Hulu and Freeform, which looks to have worked, stretching out its audience. I also think aiming a little older for its target audience has worked as well.
The first season of “Coven Academy” is available to stream now on Disney+ and Hulu.
