Eenie Meanie | Disney+ / Hulu Original Review

This summer, 20th Century Studios is releasing an all-new original movie called “Eenie Meanie”, which follows a former teenage getaway driver who is dragged back into her unsavoury past when a previous employer offers her the chance to save the life of her chronically unreliable ex-boyfriend.

With a great mix of strong characters, that get involved in a crazy heist to get themselves out of trouble, results in a movie that has a couple of big action scenes that break up the movie, making it feel more like a small indie film due to the relatively small cast. However, these big car chases bring back that classic movie-making experience of using practical effects, and so the action isn’t reliant on CGI.  I recently watched a movie on Netflix where the entire car chase was CGI and looked so fake, pulling you out of the story.   It was refreshing to see such a more simplistic movie, that delivers a fun experience that used to be much more common in movies in the 80s and 90s.

One of the things I liked about “Eenie Meanie”, is how it feels like something that could have been released decades ago.  It’s got a simple, but effective storyline, with plenty of action scenes mixed in to keep me entertained.  It’s short and to the point, with some character development for Eenie along the way.

Samara is fantastic as Ennie, being able to go from unwilling to get involved in crime, to someone who will do what’s necessary to protect themselves.   Much like in “Ready Or Not”, Samara completely steals the screen.  She comes across as hard as nails sometimes and a bad-ass, but also flawed, as she is too loyal to those around her who don’t deserve to be in her life, such as the annoying, John, who Karl Glusman plays.   He just nails that deadbeat lowlife character that you hope Eenie eventually gets rid of, and without spoiling the ending, let’s just say the ending is a little surprising but also rather satisfying.  These two have great chemistry together, and that really makes the whole movie feel more realistic.

While Andy Garcia plays a stereotypical criminal boss, there is an interesting subplot going on with this character that I thought helped make the character more likeable.

“Eenie Meanie” is a fun, easy-going movie that has some twists and turns in the story, some of which can be a bit brutal, but it’s also not a movie that you have to pay attention to every little detail or worry about how it fits into a bigger story.

Overall: “Eenie Meanie” is a fun action movie that is perfect for a lazy night in, offering easy entertainment with some thrilling car chases.  This isn’t trying to be part of a bigger franchise or trying to win any awards; it’s a straightforward movie that we don’t get enough of anymore. It’s a shame this movie didn’t get a theatrical release, instead of getting sent straight to Hulu and Disney+, as I think it’s worthy of seeing on a big screen.     I enjoyed it, it’s simple and effective, as it delivers both action and comedy.    It’s an easy recommendation for any Hulu and Disney+ subscriber to check out this summer.
