Gina Carano Settles Lawsuit With Disney Over “The Mandalorian” Firing

Back in 2021, Disney’s Lucasfilm announced that it would no longer be working with Gina Carano, who played Cara Dune in the Disney+ series, “The Mandalorian”, following the actress, posting on social media content that Lucasfilm deemed was abhorrent & unacceptable, as she had compared the political climate in America to Nazi Germany, along with her views on wearing masks during the pandemic and on her belief of voter fraud during the 2020 presidential election.

Lucasfilm publicly stated:

“Gina Carano is not currently employed by Lucasfilm and there are no plans for her to be in the future. Nevertheless, her social media posts denigrating people based on their cultural and religious identities are abhorrent and unacceptable.”

Her character was written out of the Disney+ series, and since then, the actress has only worked on a number of projects with Breitbart News and the Daily Wire.

Last year, Elon Musk revealed that he would be willing to help fund any legal bills related to people being fired for their posts on X to help protect free speech, which saw Gina Carano step forward to sue Disney for discrimination and wrongful termination over her firing from “The Mandalorian”, along with the previously announced “Rangers of the New Republic” series that never came to anything.

This week, it was revealed that Disney and Gina Carano have settled out of court, with Lucasfilm releasing a statement saying:

“With this lawsuit concluded, we look forward to identifying opportunities to work together with Ms. Carano in the near future. We have reached an agreement with Gina Carano to resolve the issues in her pending lawsuit against the companies.  Ms. Carano was always well respected by her directors, co-stars, and staff, and she worked hard to perfect her craft while treating her colleagues with kindness and respect.”

Gina Carano also released a statement saying

I have come to an agreement with Disney/Lucasfilm which I believe is the best outcome for all parties involved. I hope this brings some healing to the force.  I want to extend my deepest most heartfelt gratitude to Elon Musk, a man I’ve never met, who did this Good Samaritan deed for me in funding my lawsuit.

Thank you Mr. Musk and X for backing my case and asking for nothing in return.   To my lawyers at Schaerr|Jaffe who walked me through this unknown territory, thank you for your wisdom and guidance.  I am humbled and grateful to God for His love and grace in this outcome.

I’d like to thank you all for your unrelenting support throughout my life and career, you’ve been the heartbeat that has kept my story alive. I hope to make you proud.  I am excited to flip the page and move onto the next chapter. My desires remain in the arts, which is where I hope you will join me.  Yes, I’m smiling.

Disney had previously tried to get the case thrown out, but wasn’t successful.   No terms of the agreement between the two were made public.  It’ll be interesting to see if these are some NDA’s in place to keep things quiet for years to come.

Roger’s Take: Since President Trump’s return to power in the United States, Disney, along with many other major corporations, has been doing everything it can to move back to the centre politically, trying to avoid the wrath of the President.  This has resulted in many deals being made to avoid lengthy legal problems.

I suspect the agreement with Gina Carano was made to just get the issue resolved, so Disney can move on and avoid any more negative publicity, especially with trying to bring fans of the Star Wars franchise back, ahead of the release of “The Mandalorian & Grogu” in cinemas next year.

While Lucasfilm’s public comments do suggest Gina could return as Cara Dune, I honestly think the words are extremely vague and Disney will be unlikely to work with her on any new projects, instead just drawing a line in the sand, for everyone to move on. Some people online will no doubt continue to push Disney on the issue, but ultimately, this case is now over for both parties.

What do you think of Disney settling the case?  Let me know on social media!
