One of the biggest films of 2021 was 20th Century Studios’ “Free Guy”, which starred Ryan Reynolds as Guy, a bank teller, who learns that he is a non-player character in a bloodthirsty, open-world video game, he goes on to become the hero of the story and takes the responsibility of saving the world.

The film pulled in over $330 million dollars at the box office and was Disney’s biggest film of the year, that wasn’t a Marvel title, which is why it didn’t take Disney long to start talking about making a sequel, as both Ryan Reynolds and the film’s director Shawn Levy took to social media to say that “Free Guy 2″ was in the works,

During a recent appearance at the four-day “Just For Laughs” comedy festival at the O2 Arena in London, England, Ryan Reynolds took part in a conversation with his “Deadpool 2” co-star Rob Delaney. He was asked about a sequel to “Free Guy”, which Ryan replied:

“There is the potential to do a sequel to ‘Free Guy,’ which would be fun.  I would love it. But also like, does everything fucking have to be a sequel? I don’t know. Sometimes it’s OK to just do a movie and have it kick ass and then everyone go home.”

He added:

“So you know, there’s a bit of a push and pull there, resisting the urge to just immediately say, ‘Ohh, doing a sequel will validate the first one.’ No, the first movie validates the first one and then you can leave it at that. So I don’t know, we’re still talking about it.”

With Ryan Reynolds currently getting ready to step back onto our screens as Deadpool in the third film, maybe Ryan Reynolds feels he would like to play more characters, rather than making sequels or franchise films.  Does this mean “Free Guy 2” isn’t going to happen?  It’s hard to tell; Ryan’s comments could mean it could go either way.

“Free Guy” is available to stream now on Disney+.
