One of the most popular shows on ABC is “The Rookie”, which follows John Nolan, the oldest rookie in the LAPD, who has used his life experience, determination and sense of humour to keep up with rookies 20 years his junior. Nearing the end of his training, Nolan now faces his biggest challenge as a police officer, when he must come to terms with the choices he has made in pursuit of the truth.

The series has been a big hit and has run for six seasons, and it returns for its seventh season in the new year.  Plus, it spawned a spin-off series called “The Rookie: The Feds”, which sadly only ran for one season.

According to Deadline, Disney is now in the early stages of developing a brand new spin-off series, which will be created by Lionsgate Television and 20th Television.  “The Rookie” creator Alexi Hawley is writing the new spin-off series, and he will also be an executive producer along with Nathan Fillion and Bill Norcross.

The new show will be set in Washington state; the potential spinoff follows a male cop who is stepping into a new phase of life in his second act.   Much like with the original series, it will keep the major midlife change concept.

Since Lionsgate Television is going to be co-producing the show, it’s unclear if Disney will have global streaming rights to this new series, as currently, “The Rookie” is only available on Hulu and Hulu On Disney+ in the United States.  However, since the release of “The Rookie: The Feds”, Lionsgate acquired eOne, who previously had the international rights to the show.

Roger’s Take: With the success of “The Rookie”, it makes sense for Disney to want to continue that relationship and hopefully, Disney can secure global streaming rights for Disney+, since its a brand new project.
