Disney is once again diving into its back catalogue for ideas as it’s been revealed 20th Century Studios is working on remake of “The Hand That Rocks the Cradle”.

The original film was released in 1992 by Hollywood Pictures, which was Disney’s mature movie brand at the time and starred Rebecca De Mornay and Annabella Sciorra.

It tells the story of Peyton, who has a miscarriage due to the stress of her husband’s death. However, she blames Claire, who had reported her husband’s misconduct which led him to kill himself, and seeks revenge.

This new version is going to be directed by Michelle Garza Cervera, who previously worked on “Huesera: The Bone Woman”. It will be written by Micah Bloomberg.

It’s been revealed that Maika Monroe has been cast in the lead role, who Rebecca De Mornay played in the original film. Maika has previously starred in “Longlegs” and “Watcher”.

The upcoming film will be produced by Radar Pictures’ Ted Field, along with Michael Schaefer & Mike Larocca. M. Michael Napoliello and Maria Frisk are overseeing the project for Radar.

It’s unclear if this film will be released first in cinemas, or released directly onto Hulu and Disney+.

Roger’s Take: It’s been over thirty years since the original movie, so it’s been long enough that they can adapt it to a more modern version of the story, but the age old question of “do we need this” did come to mind when I first heard of this.

You’ll find the original movie also available to stream on Disney+ in some countries including Canada and Australia.
