Just days before the official launch of Hulu On Disney+ in the United States in March 2024, the Disney+ app around the world was updated to a different colour, moving away from blue to a new green-teal colour.

Back in December, Hulu On Disney+ launched in beta mode for Disney Bundle subscribers in the United States, but with the official launch now complete, which has seen Hulu content integrated into recommendations, sets, and collections across Disney+, making it easier to discover thousands of general entertainment titles and explore the impressive breadth and depth of Hulu and Disney+ content.

Disney has officially explained the meaning behind the change in colour, stating that it was inspired by Hulu’s signature green and Disney+’s legacy blue. This refreshed branding for Disney+ marks a new chapter in storytelling for the streaming service, incorporating Hulu into the streaming app.

Joe Earley — President of Direct-to-Consumer, Disney Entertainment, revealed the meaning behind the change of colour:

“The color is named Aurora, both for the aurora borealis, but also as an homage to Princess Aurora. It’s beautiful, a bit more adult, and signals a change.”

This isn’t the first time Disney+ has gone through a colour change, as originally, Disney+ used a purple shade, before becoming a deeper blue.

Many of the major streaming services are often connected with a specific colour, such as Netflix being Red and Hulu being Green.  However, there are many different streaming apps which use a blue colour scheme, including Paramount+ and Max, so the new colour also helps make the app stand out from the others.

The new colour also shows how Hulu and Disney+ are becoming closer together; while they are both available separately, it wouldn’t be a huge surprise to see Hulu fully merged into Disney+ in the future. The new look of the Disney+ app is also a way of increasing the time spent within the app, improving viewing time and reducing subscriber churn. It’s also a great way for Disney to try to upsell a Hulu add-on to Disney+ only subscribers.

While Hulu On Disney+ is only available in the United States, the new look has been changed globally. Though most of the original content from Hulu is available internationally through the Star Hub, many, including myself, expect to see the Star Hub eventually rebranded to Hulu, though Disney CEO Bob Iger has said there are no plans to do so.

As of the time of writing, Disney+ Hotstar, which operates in India and across many countries in South East Asia, hasn’t gone through the rebranding to the new teal colour, since Disney is currently in the process of merging Star India with Reliance.
