This summer, Disney is releasing a brand new original film called “Young Woman and the Sea”, which tells the extraordinary true story of Trudy Ederle, the first woman to successfully swim the English Channel.

Daisy Ridley stars as the accomplished swimmer who was born to immigrant parents in New York City in 1905. Through the steadfast support of her older sister and supportive trainers, she overcame adversity and the animosity of a patriarchal society to rise through the ranks of the Olympic swimming team and complete the staggering achievement – a 21-mile trek from France to England.

“Young Woman and the Sea” also stars Tilda Cobham-Hervey, Stephen Graham, Kim Bodnia, Christopher Eccleston, and Glenn Fleshler, is directed by Joachim Rønning and written by Jeff Nathanson, based on the book “Young Woman and the Sea: How Trudy Ederle Conquered the English Channel and Inspired the World” by Glenn Stout. The producers are Jerry Bruckheimer, Chad Oman, and Jeff Nathanson, with John G. Scotti, Daisy Ridley, and Joachim Rønning serving as executive producers.

When Is “Young Woman and the Sea” Released?

“Young Woman and the Sea” is being released exclusively in theatres as a special engagement from May 31st 2024, which means it will only be available in cinemas for a limited time.  Originally, “Young Woman and the Sea” was going to be released directly onto Disney+ as a Disney+ Original, but after positive test screenings, it was decided that the movie would be a short theatrical release.

When Will “Young Woman and the Sea” Be On Disney+?

No official Disney+ release date has yet been announced. Once one has been announced, this page will be updated.

Unfortunately, movies are taking much longer to arrive on Disney+ than they used to, since Disney has become more focused on making its movies more profitable, with longer theatrical releases and titles available on digital platforms to buy and rent for more time.  It’s also unlikely we will get an official Disney+ release until after the theatrical release.

Some of the latest releases, like “Wish” and “Indiana Jones And The Dial Of Destiny,” took five months to go from theatrical release to Disney+, but since “Young Woman and the Sea” is getting a rare “special engagement” theatrical release, which is something we’ve not seen from Disney in a while, it’s much harder to predict how quickly the movie will be made available on Disney+.

With the Summer Olympics taking place in France in July, I’d guess that “Young Woman and the Sea” would be available on Disney+ around that time to take advantage of the cross-promotional opportunities.  Making a 60-day theatrical release window much more likely.

What Time Will “Young Woman and the Sea” Be Released On Disney+

Disney+ updates daily at the following times:

  • Pacific Time: 00:00 AM / Midnight
  • Eastern Time: 03:00 AM
  • UK: 08:00 AM
  • Sydney, Australia – 19:00 PM

Sometimes films can arrive a few minutes later as the servers update. The Disney+ front page usually updates about an hour later.
