This Thanksgiving, Disney continues its tradition of releasing a brand new animated classic and this year it’s the turn of “Moana 2”, a sequel to the hit 2016 film, which told the story of Moana, daughter of chief Tui, embarks on a journey to return the heart of goddess Te Fitti from Maui, a demigod, after the plants and the fish on her island start dying due to a blight.

In the sequel, which is set three years later, Moana heads out on an expansive new voyage alongside a crew of unlikely seafarers. After receiving an unexpected call from her wayfinding ancestors, Moana must journey to the far seas of Oceania and into dangerous, long-lost waters for an adventure unlike anything she’s ever faced.

The film stars Auli’i Cravalho and Dwayne Johnson as Moana and Maui.  The film also features returning stars Rachel House (Moana’s Grandma, Tala), Temuera Morrison (Moana’s father, Chief Tui) and Nicole Scherzinger (Moana’s mother, Sina), as well as the voices of Hualālai Chung, David Fane and Rose Matafeo as Moana’s new crew members Moni, Kele and Loto, respectively. Awhimai Fraser voices mysterious new character Matangi; Gerald Ramsey plays Moana’s ancestor, Tautai Vasa; and Khaleesi Lambert-Tsuda lends her voice to Moana’s adoring and adorable little sister, Simea.

It has been directed by David Derrick Jr., Jason Hand, and Dana Ledoux Miller, and produced by Christina Chen and Yvett Merino, Moana 2 features music by Grammy winners Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear, Grammy nominee Opetaia Foa’i, and three-time Grammy winner Mark Mancina.

When Is “Moana 2” Released?

“Moana 2” is being released exclusively in cinemas on November 27th, 2024,

When Will “Moana 2” Be On Disney+?

Currently, no official Disney+ release date has yet been announced.

As with other major tentpole recent releases from Disney like “Inside Out 2” and “Deadpool & Wolverine”, expect this film to follow in their footsteps in having a lengthy stay at cinemas over the holiday period.

Based on some other major Disney theatrical releases, I can’t see “Moana 2” arriving on digital platforms to purchase for a couple of months and eventually arriving on Disney+ at least 100 days after its theatrical release, possibly even longer.   Recently, “Inside Out 2” took 103 days to go from a theatrical release to Disney+ and “Deadpool & Wolverine” was 110 days.

As an estimated guess, I’d be surprised if “Moana 2” arrived on Disney+ before March 2025.
