“Welcome To Wrexham” Renewed For Three More Seasons
Disney has announced that it has renewed the hit FX series, “Welcome To Wrexham” for three more seasons, carrying the show through to an eighth season, which is expected to stream through 2029.
The show follows Rob Mac (“It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia”) and Ryan Reynolds (“Deadpool”) as they navigate running the 3rd oldest professional football club in the world. “Welcome to Wrexham” is a docuseries tracking the dreams and worries of Wrexham, a working-class city in North Wales, UK, as two Hollywood stars guide the future of their historic Club.
Nick Grad, President, FX Entertainment, said in a statement regarding the renewal:
“When we launched ‘Welcome to Wrexham,’ we never imagined the impact it would have on the club and the town while creating one of TV’s most successful and beloved docuseries. This three-season renewal is a testament to the vision of Rob and Ryan and the enduring connection they’ve built with fans around the world.”
Rob Mac and Ryan Reynolds, Co-chairmen of Wrexham AFC, added:
“A three-season order for a TV series is nearly unheard of and is only possible through the ground-breaking work of our Emmy-winning documentary team and the relentless rise of Wrexham AFC and all those working so hard to make sports history. We are forever grateful to our equally fearless and tireless partners at FX for being with us every step of the way. We are so happy we get to keep telling the Wrexham story for years to come.”
Along with the confirmation of the three-season renewal, Disney has released some details on the fifth season, which returns in May.
Launching later this spring, season five chronicles Wrexham AFC’s quest for promotion to the Premier League on the heels of three consecutive promotions, a feat that has never been achieved in English Football League history.
In 2020, Rob and Ryan teamed up to purchase the 5th-tier Red Dragons in the hopes of turning the Club into an underdog story the whole world could root for. The world took notice and the Club made history, achieving back-to-back-to-back promotions, catapulting the Reds into the English Football League’s Championship for the first time in over four decades.
Having risen so quickly in the pyramid, with the eyes of the world turned to this once unknown town in Wales, fans and haters across the globe wait with bated breath to see whether the Wrexham experiment will make it all the way to the Premier League or if the team will crumble under the pressure. Summer signings bring a nearly new roster and an all-new level of intensity, while heavy competition and rising costs, combined with limited ticket availability due to the building of the new Kop stand, lead to new challenges for the Club. Dedicated staff and supporters celebrate the team’s climb toward the Premiership while bracing against naysayers who cheer for potential relegation. Will Wrexham AFC rise to the challenge and prove they deserve their place among the elite?
With a new coach and a permanent home, Wrexham AFC Women’s Team continues to battle amongst the top teams in the Welsh Adran Premier League and strives to stand out amidst a crowded field of talented women footballers. With new players, continued support from the Club and fans, and building on the groundwork they’ve laid in previous years, the Wrexham Women look to challenge for the top of the League.
Follow along as the cameras of “Welcome to Wrexham” bring you unprecedented access on the pitch, inside the locker room and alongside the players while the action unfolds as Wrexham AFC continues to push the boundaries of what anyone believed possible.
“Welcome to Wrexham” is executive produced by Rob Mac, Ryan Reynolds, Josh Drisko, Bryan Rowland, Jeff Luini, Humphrey Ker, Nicholas Frenkel, George Dewey and Boardwalk Pictures’ Andrew Fried, Dane Lillegard, Sarina Roma, and Andy Thomas. “Welcome to Wrexham” is produced by More Better Productions, Maximum Effort, 3 Arts Entertainment and Boardwalk Pictures.
Season 5 will premiere with the first two episodes on Thursday, 14th May on FXX and Hulu/Hulu On Disney+ at 9 p.m. ET in the United States, and on Disney+ internationally. One new episode of the eight-episode fifth season will drop weekly.
Roger’s Take: It shouldn’t come as a huge surprise to see FX has renewed “Welcome To Wrexham”, as it works well for both sides, Wrexham gets more global attention, and Disney gets a top-rated show for years to come. With Wrexham also moving closer to the Premiership, this show has been a major part of that process, allowing fans to fall in love with the team.
