Two New “Diary Of A Wimpy Kid” Movies Coming To Disney+

It’s been over 18 months since the release of the third “Diary Of A Wimpy Kid” animated movie on Disney+ called “Diary of a Wimpy Kid Christmas: Cabin Fever”.

During the promotional campaign for the movie, it was revealed that 20th Century Studios was working on a fourth movie in the franchise based on “The Last Straw” book, but since then, we’ve not heard too much more about it.

Today, The DisInsider revealed that 20th Century Studios was developing a new “Diary Of A Wimpy Kid” animated film based on “The Getaway’ book, which is the 12th book in the series from Jeff Kinney, who is also an executive producer on the film.

“The Getaway” tells the story of Greg Heffley and his family, who are getting out of town.  With the cold weather setting in and the stress of the Christmas holiday approaching, the Heffleys decide to escape to a tropical island resort for some much-needed rest and relaxation. A few days in paradise should do wonders for Greg and his frazzled family.  But the Heffleys soon discover that paradise isn’t everything it’s cracked up to be. Sun-poisoning, stomach troubles and venomous creatures all threaten to ruin the family’s vacation.

Casting is underway for a new actor to take on the voice of Greg Heffley, as the actors on the previous animated movies are getting older, and unlike the live-action one, it’s easier to recast child actors.

It was also revealed that Matt Danner, who previously worked on “Shred Force” and Disney’s “Legend Of The Three Caballeros”, would be directing “The Getaway”.

However, the film’s director, Matt Danner, took to social media to correct speculation about the future of the franchise, confirming that the fourth animated film will arrive on Disney+ in time for this year’s Christmas and a fifth film is also in development.

This is sort of correct. This will actually be the 5th animated Wimpy Kid movie. The 4th one comes out this Christmas!

The previous three animated “Diary Of A Wimpy Kid” movies, along with the live-action versions of these books, are available to stream on Disney+.
