Earlier this year, the classic 20th Century studios film, “The Sound Of Music”, was unexpectedly removed from Disney+ around the world without any warning.

Recently, Disney announced it would be showing “The Sound Of Music” on ABC on Sunday, 17th December 2023 at 7:00-11:00 p.m. EST. Indicating that Disney may have sorted out whatever issue they had with the film.

And today, in another surprise addition, “The Sound Of Music” has been returned to Disney+ around the world, including in the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the United Kingdom.

In this true-life story, Julie Andrews lights up the screen as Maria, a spirited young Austrian woman who leaves the convent to become a governess for Captain von Trapp’s (Christopher Plummer) seven unruly children. Her charm and songs soon win the hearts of the children – and their father.  But when Nazi Germany unites with Austria, Maria is forced to attempt a daring escape with her new family.

The film also stars Angela Cartwright, Anna Lee, Ben Wright, Charmian Carr, Christopher Plummer, Daniel Truhitte, Debbie Turner, Doris Lloyd, Duane Chase, Eleanor Parker, Evadne Baker, Gil Stuart, Gilchrist Stuart, Heather Menzies, Julie Andrews, Kym Karath, Marni Nixon, Nicholas Hammond, Norma Varden, Peggy Wood, Portia Nelson, and Richard Haydn.

This film features the heartwarming fan-favourite songs, including “Edelweiss,” “My Favorite Things,” “Climb Ev’ry Mountain,” “Do-Re-Mi,” “Sixteen Going on Seventeen,” “The Lonely Goatherd” and “The Sound of Music.”

While removals from Disney+ are common, these are usually down to licensing issues, such as a long-standing deal with HBO or Starz. Though some new titles have been removed to write off the assets, but with “The Sound Of Music”, none of those issues are the reason.

There has been a suggestion that there might have been a licensing issue with Rodgers and Hammerstein over the music, but nothing has been officially announced.  Hopefully, Disney won’t remove “The Sound Of Music” from Disney+ again!
