The Disney Channel Livestream Coming To Disney+ In Germany
Over the past few years, we’ve seen Disney+ slowly evolve into a more advanced streaming service than it was when it first launched. But it is looking to the past for a new feature, as it’s been revealed that the Disney Channel will soon be available for Disney+ subscribers in Germany from May 2026.
The Disney Channel will continue to be available on linear platforms, including satellite, cable and OTT distribution, but the addition of this channel to Disney+ in Germany will offer subscribers a more traditional channel experience.
The new additional feature won’t cost subscribers any more money, much like the recent announcement of other live content from ESPN. Unfortunately, Disney hasn’t confirmed a launch date for the Disney Channel on Disney+ in Germany.
Eun-Ky Park, SVP Direct-to-Consumer & Networks and Country Manager GSA at The Walt Disney Company, said in a statement to Broadband TV News regarding the expansion:
“The Disney Channel and Disney+ have always addressed complementary audiences. While the Disney Channel offers a linear and carefully curated schedule for the whole family, Disney+ enables personalised on-demand viewing and live content such as the UEFA Women’s Champions League.
The integration of the Disney Channel on Disney+ is therefore the next logical step: we combine orientation and a shared viewing experience with the flexibility of streaming, offering our audiences more choice at no additional cost.
The Disney Channel in Germany was one of the few international linear channels that wasn’t closed down, plus with it being a free-to-air channel, that likely makes it easier for Disney to expand its reach to more people in Germany, compared to other countries where it’s been included in many traditional cable/satellite pay-TV bundles.
In the United States, Disney+ has been offering curated playlists, which it calls Streams, and recently, those have also expanded out to Latin America. Those subscribers in some countries in Latin America also now have access to Radio Disney within Disney+. So hopefully subscribers in other regions will get access to this feature.
Roger’s Take: Adding a livestream of the Disney Channel linear channel sounds like a fantastic idea, it’s just a shame it’s taken Disney years to do this. They had this option in the old DisneyLife streaming service that existed before Disney+ even launched, and while I’d like to see this feature added in other countries. But I suspect it won’t be something that will go global anytime soon.
