Disney has announced that the Latin American drama series, “The Cry Of The Butterflies”, aka “El Grito De Las Mariposas”, will be coming to Disney+ in the United Kingdom and Ireland on March 8th 2023, which is on the same day that the new series will arrive on Star+ in Latin America and on Disney+ in some other countries around the world, including in Spain and Canada.

“The Cry of the Butterflies” examines the events leading up the brutal murder of Dominican activist Minerva Mirabal and her two activist sisters, on the orders of dictator Rafael Leónidas Trujillo. The heinous crime would set in motion not only the end of a vicious regime, but also come to mark the global fight against gender-based violence.

The story is so important to the Dominican people, that every November 25th, on the anniversary of their 1960 execution by Trujillo’s regime, the Dominican Republic celebrates International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.

The series was created by Juan Pablo Buscaini and consists of thirteen 50-minute episodes. It stars a cast of talented Spanish and Caribbean talent including Susana Abaitua (“Patria”, “I Know Who You Are”), Sandy Hernández (“On the Block”), Guillermo Toledo (“I’m so Excited”) and Alberto Garcia (“Che”). Gloriamundi Producciones have produced it with Madrid-based Tandem Films (“Rosa’s Wedding”) in addition to Mediabyte.
