Earlier this week, during Disney’s quarterly financial results investor call, CEO Bob Iger made a major announcement that Taylor Swift’s concert film, “Taylor Swift | The Eras Tour (Taylor’s Version),” would be coming to Disney+ around the world on March 15th 2024.

“’The Eras Tour’ has been a true phenomenon that has and continues to thrill fans around the world, and we are very excited to bring this electrifying concert to audiences wherever they are, exclusively on Disney+.”

The concert film was a huge success when it was released in cinemas last year, pulling in over $260 million dollars, on top of a world tour that has pulled in over a billion dollars in ticket sales.

Taylor’s Version will feature the concert film in its entirety for the first time and includes the song “Cardigan” and four additional acoustic songs.   The concert was filmed at Los Angeles’s SoFi Stadium over three nights, and Variety is reporting that the four additional songs are likely to be  “Death by a Thousand Cuts,” “Maroon,” “You Are in Love”, and “I Can See You.”  Since Taylor performed those songs during those specific concerts, they weren’t included in the previously released version.

According to Puck News, Disney has paid over $75 million for the right to stream the concert film on Disney+, outbidding Netflix and Universal Pictures.  Ironically, Universal Studios handled digital/VOD distribution for the film, while Taylor’s team went directly to AMC to distribute the film in cinemas.

Disney has previously worked with Taylor Swift on the Disney+ Original special, “Folklore”.  Disney has also had great success with specials featuring many talented stars over the past few years, including Elton John, Billy Ellish and Miley Cyrus.

With the huge amount of attention Taylor Swift brings to any project, it’s likely the release of “Taylor Swift | The Eras Tour (Taylor’s Version) will be a massive success for Disney+.  And When compared to the costs of developing other Disney+ Original programming like Marvel’s “Secret Invasion”, which covers over $200 million and a reported $170 million on “Peter Pan & Wendy”, suddenly this concert film doesn’t look as expensive.
