This September, stars from the West End and Broadway will join together to pay tribute to Alan Menken, the creator of the music of “Beauty and the Beast” and “The Little Mermaid”, in a special concert, which will be taking place at the Vienna Concert Hall on the 23rd September 2022.

The following evening, on the 24th of September, there will also be an award ceremony, which will see Alan Menken awarded the “Max Steiner Award”, by the city of Vienna. Alan was announced as the recipient of the award in 2020, but due to the pandemic, the actual concert was delayed.

The concert will see performances by Adam Jacobs (Aladdin), Trevor Dion Nicholas (Hamilton), Celinde Schoenmaker (The Light in the Piazza), Christine Allado (The Prince of Egypt) and Bongiwe Happiness Malunga (The Lion King).

In a statement to Billboard, Alan said:

“I am truly honored to be receiving the prestigious Max Steiner Award this year. And I feel humbled to have my name and work associated with the brilliant and legendary Max Steiner himself. The way his creative life moved from theater to film to the concert stage, even as his personal life moved him from Austria to England, and from Broadway to Hollywood, is an inspiration for all of us who follow in his footsteps nearly 50 years after his passing. And to receive this award in Vienna, the classical music capitol of the world, promises to make this one of the highlights of my life and career.”

It has been announced the concert will also stream on Disney+ globally, in addition to airing on Austrian Broadcasting ORF. A release date for the concert will be revealed at a later date.
