Sony Reveal “Spider-Man: Beyond The Spider-Verse” Release Date
During Sony’s presentation at the CinemaCon event in Las Vegas on Monday night, Sony confirmed that the third instalment in the “Spider-Verse” franchise will be hitting cinemas around the world on June 4th 2027.
This is going to be the third movie in the trilogy, following “Into The Spider-Verse”, which was released in 2018. After gaining superpowers from a spider bite, Miles Morales protects the city as Spider-Man. Soon, he meets alternate versions of himself and gets embroiled in an epic battle to save the multiverse. The second movie, “Across The Spider-Verse” was released in 2023 and saw Miles Morales joining forces with Gwen Stacy in an attempt to curb the Spot, a scientist, from harnessing the power of the multiverse.
The third film, “Spider-Man: Beyond The Spider-Verse” will kick off just moments after the events of “Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse”, with Miles being a fugitive on the run from every other spider in the multiverse
During the presentation, the movie’s producer Phil Lord and co-directors Bob Persichetti and Justin K. Thompson said:
“We know how important this franchise is to so many people around us. We just could not run it back. So, we decided we needed to take the time to make sure we got it just right.”
Lord also added:
“It’s going to be a massive finale to the trilogy.”
Some new images from the upcoming film were also revealed to the public:
Originally, “Beyond The Spider-Verse” was scheduled to be released in early 2024; however, due to the actors’ strike, it was pushed back, and now Sony has bumped back the movie a couple of years. The film has gone through some re-writes, but it’s more likely that development has been slowed down following news that the staff were working under difficult working conditions, which were caused by the constant revisions that resulted in over 100 artists leaving the project before its completion. This adds to speculation that Sony would need to improve the working conditions for the staff in order to get the project back on track, hence the multiple-year delay.
Since these three animated Spider-Man films are distributed by Sony Pictures, they won’t automatically be available on Disney+ like movies released by Marvel Studios. While some Spider-Man films have been available on Disney+ due to licensing deals, with the third movie now being released in 2027, it will fall outside the current Sony/Disney Pay 2 window deal that provides Disney+ with access to Sony’s theatrical releases, two years after their initial release.
Roger’s Take: I think it’s a smart move by Sony to give the creatives and people working on this film more time to make it as good as it can be and not put unnecessary stress on the people working on it, especially as animated films take years to make. I do think releasing it a month after “Avengers: Secret Wars” might be a problem, but it’ll have all summer to be an popular film for kids and families to go see. I also am looking forward to wrapping up most of these Multiverse storylines in 2027.
