Filming is currently underway on the upcoming Disney+ series, “Percy Jackson and the Olympians” in Vancouver, Canada.

Based on Disney Hyperion’s best-selling book series by award-winning author Rick Riordan, “Percy Jackson and the Olympians” tells the fantastical story of a 12-year-old modern demigod, Percy Jackson, who’s just coming to terms with his newfound divine powers when the sky god Zeus accuses him of stealing his master lightning bolt. With help from his friends Grover and Annabeth, Percy must embark on an adventure of a lifetime to find it and restore order to Olympus.

Walker Scobell will be playing the role of Percy Jackson, with Aryan Simhadri (Disney’s “Spin”) and Leah Sava Jeffries (“Empire”) will play Percy’s friends Grover and Annabeth.

The new eight-episode series will retell the story of the first book, but there are multiple books in the series. When 20th Century Fox released films based on the first two books, we’ve not yet seen the other books brought to our screens.

Recently, Rick Riordan was asked a question on GoodReads if each season of the Disney+ series equate to one whole book? To which he replied:

That’s the idea, yes. Of course, first we have to get approval to do future seasons. Right now, we are only green-lit for one season, but if you all watch and like it, I am optimistic we will get approval to do more.

There will be many reasons why a series might not get renewed for future seasons.  Budgets and viewing figures are the two biggest issues.  We’ve seen many series before that have been planned from the start to be multiple seasons, but due to poor viewing ratings, later seasons were cancelled.  So there is no guarantee that we will see five seasons of “Percy Jackson And The Olympians”, but if this series does well, it does stand a good chance.

Rick Riordan and Jon Steinberg will serve as writers of the pilot, and James Bobin will direct. Steinberg will oversee the series with his producing partner Dan Shotz. Steinberg and Shotz serve as executive producers alongside Bobin, Riordan, Rebecca Riordan, Bert Salke, Monica Owusu-Breen, Jim Rowe, Anders Engström, Jet Wilkinson and The Gotham Group’s Ellen Goldsmith-Vein, Jeremy Bell and D.J. Goldberg.
