“Peter Pan & Wendy” Disney+ Original Film Early Social Media Reactions
This coming Friday, Disney is releasing “Peter Pan & Wendy”, which is a brand new live-action reimagining of the J.M. Barrie novel and the 1953 animated classic.
Directed by David Lowery (“The Green Knight,” “Pete’s Dragon”), the film introduces Wendy Darling, a young girl afraid to leave her childhood home behind who meets Peter Pan, a boy who refuses to grow up. Alongside her brothers and a tiny fairy, Tinker Bell, she travels with Peter to the magical world of Neverland. There, she encounters an evil pirate captain, Captain Hook, and embarks on a thrilling and dangerous adventure that will change her life forever.
Critics have been watching the film this week, ahead of its release on Disney+ on Friday and have been sharing their first early thoughts on the film. I’ve also been able to watch the film early and will be sharing my full review on Friday, but here’s my first reaction:
#PeterPanandWendy is the latest live-action remake by #Disney, though the story has had some major changes. Jude Law makes a fun Hook. It looks & sounds great. I'm sure kids are going to enjoy it, but honestly, I found it a bit dull. It arrives on #disneyplus on Friday pic.twitter.com/yZquD6Wvt9

Here are some other critics’ responses to the film:
I was happily surprised by David Lowery's PETER PAN & WENDY – a lively adaptation with one of my favourite Disney scores in recent years. Whilst it could have benefitted from a longer runtime to develop its characters even more, there is something very magic about this film. pic.twitter.com/tsKHDSkus5

#PeterPanAndWendy is ENCHANTING! The cast shines in a more grounded story with the visionary David Lowery directing. Jude Law is incredible as Captain Hook. The story is entertaining and it never feels overlong or dull. A great time for the whole family.

#PeterPanAndWendy is GREAT!
David Lowery showcases the best of his ability while crafting a throwback to early 2000’s Fairytale movies mixing depth but also
Never forgetting the essence of what made the animated feature so magical!

I wasn’t expecting much from #PeterPanAndWendy but it was a really nice surprise. It’s a pretty decent adaptation of the classic story with a great ensemble of young actors and brilliant musical callbacks to Disney’s 1953 original. pic.twitter.com/1z70cVMME2

I'm happy #PeterPanAndWendy exists. The entire cast is wonderful, with Jude Law especially fantastic as a more grounded Hook. Lowery balances Disney nods with sweet & deep new angles for the story. I'm mixed on it overall, it missed some opps for more epic Neverland adventure! pic.twitter.com/K2dgr8O1aY

Peter Pan & Wendy: David Lowery takes a huge chunk of studio cash and blows it on taking a crew into the Canadian wilderness and making a Malick film for kids. Absolutely legendary behaviour

I was surprised how much I enjoyed #PeterPanAndWendy. The film does a good job at diving in to the backstories of Peter & Hook, which I think adds to the lure. I really enjoyed Jude Law’s performance as Hook and Ever Anderson is brilliant as Wendy, who is real star of the film. pic.twitter.com/cWN9THzd9o

#PeterPanAndWendy A rather magicless reimagining somewhat made worthwhile by up-and-comer Ever Anderson. The more interesting choices are weighed down by a story that doesn't fit with the grounded visuals &ideas Lowery applies. Not a movie I'd ever revisit or excitedly show a kid
