Earlier this week, Disney+ launched two brand new tiers in the United Kingdom, Standard and Standard, with ads that offer consumers a range of subscription plans and increased flexibility to suit their needs.  However, for Virgin Media customers, neither of these two tiers are available on Virgin Media devices, meaning Disney+ subscribers must stay on the higher-priced Disney+ Premium tier in order to watch their favourite shows and films.  Up until earlier this week, there was just one Disney+ tier, which has now been rebranded to Premium, which offers an ad-free tier, along with 4K content and four concurrent streams at once.

When the ad-supported tier launched in the United States last year, while the majority of devices were able to take advantage of the cheaper tier, some devices, like Roku, weren’t able to for a while, until an update to the system had been made.  Hopefully, it won’t be too long until the Disney+ app on Virgin Media devices is updated, to allow customers more choice.  Virgin Media currently only offer the Disney+ Premium plan.

This was confirmed by Virgin’s FAQ, which states :

For now, we only offer the Disney+ Premium plan.

The Disney+ Premium plan is ad-free, allows you to watch on four devices at the same time, and offers up to Ultra HD streaming on 4K-ready devices – plus Dolby Atmos sound – for the greatest Disney+ viewing experience.

If you’d like to move to a different tier, you’ll need to cancel your subscription with us by logging in to your My Virgin Media account before signing up with Disney+ directly.

As an existing Disney+ subscriber through Virgin Media, you’ll automatically get the Disney+ Premium plan, allowing you to make the most of your Disney+ experience.  However, the price has now increased to £10.99 a month.  So, if you do want to move to a cheaper tier, you may need to use a different device, such as a Smart TV or games console like a PlayStation or Xbox.

Here are some details on the different tiers available in the UK:

Disney has also confirmed that the new Standard and Standard with Ads tiers are currently not available on Virgin Media devices:

The Disney+ Standard with Ads plan is not currently available on Virgin Media O2 devices. This means that viewers are unable to sign up for this plan or stream ad-supported Disney+ content on these devices. If you recently subscribed to an ad-supported Disney+ plan as a new or existing subscriber and are unable to view on your preferred device, you have the following options:

  • Change your subscription to Disney+ Standard or Disney+ Premium
  • Stream Disney+ content from a device that supports Disney+ Standard with Ads

Hopefully, Virgin Media TV customers will soon get access to the cheaper tiers, but currently, there is no timeframe for when these will become available.
