Natasha Liu Bordizzo Reveals Update On “Star Wars: Ahsoka” Season 2
One of the most popular original shows to be released on Disney+ in 2023 was “Ahsoka”, which is set after the fall of the Empire, “Star Wars: Ahsoka” follows the former Jedi Knight Ahsoka Tano as she investigates an emerging threat to a vulnerable galaxy.
Earlier this year, Disney announced that “Ahsoka” had been renewed for a second season and released a sketch showing Ahsoka Tano and her apprentice, Sabine Wren, atop one of the ancient statues seen on Peridea in Season 1, with the words “The story continues” in the sky.
Recently, over the Labor Day weekend, Natasha Liu Bordizzo, who plays Sabine Wren in the “Ahsoka” series, was attending Dragon Con 2024 in Atlanta.
During a Star Wars panel, which also included Giancarlo Esposito, Manny Jacinto, and Danny Trejo, Natasha revealed that she wouldn’t be able to attend Dragon Con next year, since she would be filming the second season of “Star Wars: Ahsoka”.
Should filming still be ongoing next summer, it’s unlikely we are going to see “Ahsoka” arrive on Disney+ until 2026, possibly even 2027, due to the amount of special effects needed for the show.
This will undoubtedly upset some fans of the show since multiple-year breaks between seasons are disappointing but should be expected. Disney has been very open about slowing down its output of Star Wars projects, as it overdid them during the boom of streaming.
With “Skeleton Crew” set to come out later this year, into early 2025, plus the second season of “Andor”, there will be plenty of new Star Wars entertainment arriving on Disney+ next year. In 2026, Disney is looking to release it’s first film since “The Rise Of Skywalker”, with “The Mandalorian and Grogu” in May, so this will likely mean we won’t see another Star Wars release during the summer, as it looks to boost the box office results for the film.
Roger’s Take: The push to streaming has resulted in some major changes in how television is made and while Disney can turn around new seasons of shows like “The Bear” or “Only Murders In The Building” in less than a year, the special effects needed for Marvel and Star Wars shows, drastically slows production down, without spending a fortune on more people to do it quicker.
We are going to see a lot fewer Star Wars shows arriving on Disney+, and the days of three shows a year are likely never going to return, but the other big issue is Lucasfilm has been so unfocused on what it’s delivering audiences. While “Skeleton Crew” takes place within the “Mandalorian” era, “Andor” and “The Acolyte” took place in different time periods, plus with a drastic slowdown, no doubt the original plan was that we would have different eras arriving throughout the year, to keep things fresh. But with less shows being created, hopefully, they just focus on one era and give us new instalments each year, as these long breaks between seasons aren’t good for creators or fans.
