Next Christmas, Disney is releasing “Mufasa: The Lion King”, which is a prequel/sequel to the live-action reimagining of “The Lion King”, and the story is told in flashbacks, with Rafiki, Timon, and Pumbaa telling the story of the rise of one of the greatest kings of the Pride Lands. to a young lion cub.

Oscar-winning director Barry Jenkins is directing the new film, and it will see Billy Eichner and Seth Rogen return as the voices of Timon and Pumbaa.   It will also feature music that has been composed by Hans Zimmer, who has worked on both versions of “The Lion King”.   With Adele Romanski and Mark Ceryak producing.

And according to the Hollywood Handle, we’ve got a little more information on what the story of the film will be about:

The movie will follow the rise of one of Pride Lands’ greatest kings, returns to the savannah where Rafiki tells Kiara – Simba and Nala’s daughter – the story of her grandfather, with some comments coming from Timon and Pumbaa.

Back at last year’s D23 Expo, fans in attendance during the Walt Disney Studios showcase event saw a small teaser trailer for the film, which looked fantastic!

This new film will test audiences’ desires for live-action versions of animated classics, since “The Lion King” is one of the most popular Disney films, and the live-action version was a huge box office success. But this one is likely going to be much harder to get people to watch, unless it’s very good!

With the film not coming out to next Christmas, after Disney rescheduled its lineup, taking over the Marvel “Thunderbolts” release date, we probably won’t hear much about this new film until later next year.

“Mufasa: The Lion King” is coming to cinemas on 20th December 2024, and while we wait, you can watch the “live-action” version, along with the classic animated film, on Disney+ now.
