Marvel’s “Wonder Man” Cancelled After One Season
Earlier this year, Marvel Studios released a brand new original series on Disney+ around the world called “Wonder Man”, and it told the origin story of a different type of superhero, an aspiring Hollywood actor, Simon Williams, who was struggling to get his career off the ground.
During a chance meeting with Trevor Slattery, an actor whose biggest roles may be well behind him, Simon learns legendary director Von Kovak is remaking the superhero film “Wonder Man.” These two actors at opposite ends of their careers doggedly pursue life-changing roles in this film as audiences get a peek behind the curtain of the entertainment industry.
Following the show’s initial launch on Disney+ in January, which got rave reviews and solid viewership with a binge drop on the streaming service, back in March it was announced that a second season was happening, with the creators, Destin Daniel Cretton and Andrew Guest, returning along with the actors Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Ben Kingsley.
However, that renewal may have been revealed a little too early, as Variety has revealed that the show won’t be coming back and has been cancelled after just one season.
Roger’s Take: I was surprised that “Wonder Man” was renewed in the first place, as it always felt like one of the last remaining Marvel projects from the Disney+ expansion era. We are no longer in that period, where Disney+ is no longer getting a blank cheque to make as much content as it wants, and Marvel Studios has had to scale back its plans to reduce superhero churn and return the genre to its best, with a focus on quality over quantity.
It’s a shame that Marvel decided to announce the second season in the first place, as giving fans hope that it would be returning, just to pull the plug now does seem a little cruel. But as with any character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, we could very likely see these characters appear elsewhere in the future.
