Marvel’s Kevin Feige Confirms “Nova” Disney+ Series Is In Development
Over the past few years, there have been many reports of Marvel developing a new project featuring “Nova,” a cosmic superhero called Richard Rider, who in the comic books is a member of the Nova Corps until the Annihilation Wave destroyed them all, leaving him imbued with their combined power. Guided by the super-intelligent Worldmind computer, Richard Rider wages a one-man battle for justice as Nova.
Marvel has already featured the Nova Corps in the first “Guardians Of The Galaxy” film, so the rumours of Nova being introduced into the MCU have been floating around for a while.
During a recent interview with ComicBook.com to promote the upcoming release of “Deadpool & Wolverine”, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige was asked about the rumoured “Nova” project that been in development, to which he confirmed, “It’s happening, it’s coming together. Richard Rider, yep.”
When asked if this was going to be a movie or a Disney+ series, Kevin Feige confirmed that it would be “A show, yeah, yeah.”
However, Kevin went onto confirm that we won’t be seeing it for a while as ” It’s three or four years out.”
Earlier this year, Marvel executive Brad Winderbaum appeared on Phase Zero podcast to promote the new “X-Men ’97” Disney series and confirmed that Marvel Studios is in early development on a “Nova” project.
“We love Nova. We are in really early development on Nova. We have a new system behind the scenes at Marvel Studios. We’re more like a traditional studio now. We are developing more than we actually will produce. So, there are plans to develop Nova. I love Nova too. I love Rich Rider too. I hope it gets to the screen. You know, the world is chaos. There’s always things. It’s hard to make anything. You’ve got to kind of conjure these things to make them happen, But, I would like to see a Nova show one day.”
Next weekend, Marvel Studios will be hosting a panel in Hall H at San Diego Comic-Con, where it’s likely going to be giving an update on its release schedule following lots of delays and alterations. Marvel is also taking part in the Studio Showcase presentation at the Honda Center in a few weeks times at the D23: Ultimate Fan Event, so it wouldn’t be a surprise if Marvel officially unveils the project and gives us the “logo”.
Marvel Studios is drastically reducing its output as Disney attempts to cut costs and improve the quality of films and shows, following too many recent projects that have underperformed. Marvel already has four shows for Disney+ already filmed, “Daredevil: Born Again”, “Ironheart”, “Agatha All Along” and “Wonder Man”, so it’s got the next couple of years released scheduled in advance, so it wouldn’t be a surprise if “Nova” doesn’t start production for another year, since it will need plenty of time in post-production.
Roger’s Take: I think a “Nova” Disney+ series would be a great idea and a show they can plan to build out for multiple seasons if they want to. “Nova” is a popular character from the comics that has never been translated into live-action and could also allow Marvel to explore space, keeping him well away from the Multiverse elements. I also believe this series will be mentioned at either SDCC or D23, since Kevin Feige is talking about it openly now.
