The next big Marvel Studios project to arrive on Disney+ is the second season of “Loki”, which returns to Disney+ on Friday 6th, October 2023.  The first season of “Loki” is the most-watched Marvel Studios series on Disney+, and the second season picks up in the aftermath of the shocking season finale when Loki finds himself in a battle for the soul of the Time Variance Authority. Along with Mobius, Hunter B-15, and a team of new and returning characters, Loki navigates an ever-expanding and increasingly dangerous Multiverse in search of Sylvie, Judge Renslayer, Miss Minutes, and the truth of what it means to possess free will and glorious purpose.

According to Forbes, Disney has spent $141.3 million (£110.6 million) on pre-production and filming of the second season of “Loki”, which is on par with many Marvel films from the earlier phases, including Doctor Strange (£102.7 million), Thor 2: The Dark World (£99.4 million) and Guardians of the Galaxy (£91.1 million).    This means that each episode of the second season of “Loki” cost roughly $23.5 million to make.

However, its important to note, that the cost of the second season of “Loki” is drastically lower than the recent release, “Secret Invasion”, which reportability cost over $211.6 million (£166.2 million) to make, though this series had higher costs due to four months of reshoots due to the pandemic.    And the first season of “Star Wars: Andor” was priced at $250 million, though the show had twice as many episodes.

Usually, studios keep the budgets of shows secret, but since “Loki”, “Secret Invasion” and “Andor” are all filmed in the United Kingdom, they benefit from a Television Tax Relief scheme, which allows studios to claim back up to 25% of the money spent in the UK, depending on how much filming is done in the UK, and how much of the UK is shown off.   The studios must set each show up as a separate UK company, which must file publicly-available financial statements.

Disney is looking to reduce the number of Marvel and Star Wars shows for Disney+ as part of a larger budget squeeze to save $5 billion and to help make Disney+ more profitable, plus reduce franchise fatigue with its popular brands.

“Loki” stars Tom Hiddleston, Sophia Di Martino, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Wunmi Mosaku, Eugene Cordero, Rafael Casal, Tara Strong, Kate Dickie, Liz Carr, Neil Ellice, with Jonathan Majors, Ke Huy Quan and Owen Wilson. Justin Benson & Aaron Moorhead, Dan Deleeuw and Kasra Farahani direct episodes. The head writer is Eric Martin. Kevin Feige, Stephen Broussard, Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso, Brad Winderbaum, Kevin R. Wright, Tom Hiddleston, Justin Benson & Aaron Moorhead, Eric Martin and Michael Waldron are the executive producers, with Trevor Waterson serving as co-executive producer.

While we wait for the second season of “Loki” to arrive on Disney+ on October 6th 2023, the first season of “Loki” is also available to stream now on Disney+.
