Marvel Zombies | Disney+ Original Review
Just in time for the Halloween season, Disney+ is releasing a brand new four-part animated series called “Marvel Zombies”, which is a spin-off from a Zombies-themed episode of the hit series, “What If”?
The show is set after the Avengers are overtaken by a zombie plague, a desperate group of survivors discovers the key to bringing an end to the super-powered undead, racing across a dystopian landscape and risking life and limb to save their world.
For “Marvel Zombies”, the show isn’t afraid to do things a little differently, embracing the gore and horror, to warrant the R rating, as this is not a show for kids. There are plenty of bodies being ripped to shreds and blood splattering everywhere, to keep up with the tone of shows like “The Walking Dead”.
Each episode is approximately 30 minutes long, so if you watch all four back-to-back, it’s essentially the same length as a movie. While there is an overarching theme of Ms Marvel trying to save the universe, each episode subtly shifts the story by introducing other established characters from the recent shows and films, while also giving Ms Marvel something new to deal with.
There are lots of great things about “Marvel Zombies”, as the creators had much more flexibility to do things they just couldn’t do on the big screen. This series has an “Avengers” level character list, with dozens of superheroes from the shows and films included, many of which are voiced by the same actors. The show also features so many amazing scenes that would be way too expensive to do in real life, which is why animation can be more entertaining than live-action.
Another aspect of “Marvel Zombies”, is how it truly feels like the one Marvel project released in the “Multiverse Saga”, that actually feels like everything is connected, unlike the actual shows or movies. Highlighting the problem of Marvel introducing so many characters within a short time, with no follow-up and “Marvel Zombies” brings almost all those characters together for an epic story, which sadly is going to be unseen by so many Marvel fans, as animated projects rarely grab the general audience’s attention.
Another aspect of “Marvel Zombies” that I found interesting was the use of Blade, who had been merged with Moon Knight as an alternative version, which didn’t make as much sense when every other character felt and looked more like how they were in the real-life versions. It kind of felt like they should have either just used Moon Knight, but because of all the delays and issues with making the “Blade” movie, they had expected the character to be on our screens by now. Highlighting once again that Marvel’s overall plans were drastically changed during the creation of “Marvel Zombies”.
As a fan of shows like “The Walking Dead”, I loved how this show teases us with what it would be like if Captain America or Scarlet Witch became a zombie, but also how the heroes would need to adapt to survive. I also liked how this show is willing to take huge swings and surprises, as the normal rule book has been thrown out the window. Any character can be killed at any given time, but then also return as a zombie, as another problem for Ms Marvel to deal with.
The animation style of “Marvel Zombies” isn’t perfect; sometimes it felt a little off, but overall, I enjoyed how it felt like a comic book coming to our screens. This also means that any of the guts and gore elements feel less realistic, reminding me more of a video game in terms of its violence.
Overall: “Marvel Zombies” is one of the best Disney+ Original shows released so far by Marvel. The crazy story is unique and plays within the larger MCU with an all-star cast that finally brings together all of these characters for an “Avengers” level threat, but with much more blood and guts. It’s bonkers, it’s bloody, it makes no sense, and ultimately has no real consequences for the MCU, but it’s certainly a fun 2 hours to get lost in the world of “What If”?
Rating: 4.5 Out Of 5
All four episodes of “Marvel Zombies” will be released on Disney+ around the world on Wednesday, 24th September 2025.
