In the upcoming “Daredevil” revival, “Daredevil: Born Again”, we will see many of faces from former Netflix Original shows return including Charlie Cox, Vincent D’Onofrio, Deborah Ann Woll, Elden Henson and Ayelet Zurer, along with Jon Bernthal, who will also be returning as Frank Castle, aka The Punisher.

Frank Castle was initially introduced during the second season of “Daredevil” back in 2016, before going on to get his own standalone series, that ran for two seasons, until Netflix cancelled all the Marvel shows ahead of the launch of Disney+.

But it won’t be a one-time return, as it’s been revealed that The Punisher will also be getting his own standalone Disney+ special, similar to “Werewolf By Night” and “The Guardians Of The Galaxy: Holiday Special.”

Jon Bernthal will also co-write the special with Reinaldo Marcus Green, who will also direct it. The pair worked together on “We Own This City”.

In an interview with EW to promote the upcoming “Daredevil: Born Again” show, Brad Winderbaum, the head of Marvel Television, revealed a little more on The Punisher Disney+ special:

“It’s like a shotgun blast of a story, but also has all the pathos and emotion that you want out of a Frank Castle story.  It’s so exciting.”

He explained that the story concept for the Punisher special came about while filming the first season of  “Daredevil: Born Again”, which sees Matt Murdock say to Frank “because he needs something done that he’s unwilling to do.  And Frank, a bull in a china shop, drives right to the heart of the matter.”

“Bernthal is a generational actor.  He’s incredible what he brings to all the roles he plays, but particularly Frank Castle. And he’s a great writer. He knows the character inside and out…. Also, I love Punisher, but I love Jon’s Punisher in particular. The idea that he’s in the MCU and can bring that to the greater universe, especially the more grounded street-level stuff, is a huge opportunity and, as a fan, the greatest thing ever.”

With the project still in the early stages of development, no plot or casting details have been revealed.

This new Punisher special is expected to be released on Disney+ show in 2026, alongside the second season for “Daredevil: Born Again”, which begins filming this month in New York.

While we wait for a new “Punisher” special, you can catch the two seasons of the show on Disney+ and “Daredevil: Born Again” will premiere on Disney+ on March 4th 2025, with new episodes being released each week.

Roger’s Take: It’s great to see Marvel is going to keep using its Special Presentation format for Disney+. Not every character needs their own mini-series, nor justify the cost of making a major movie. With Marvel cutting back its output of shows and films, adding in some smaller adventures, especially for street-level heroes who don’t need much special effects, thus keeping the budget down, just makes sense. Hopefully, this is something we will see a little more moving forward.
