“Light Shop” Becomes Biggest Korean Disney+ Original Release Of 2024
Earlier this month, Disney released a brand new Korean drama series called “Light Shop” on Hulu and Hulu On Disney+ in the United States and on Disney+ in the rest of the world.
The series tells the story of how, every night, a light shop brightens up the dark alley and welcomes customers. Even if it is just for one customer, the adamant owner keeps the shop open. However, running the shop at night is not so easy as he is visited by all sorts of customers.
“Light Shop” was created by webtoon artist Kangfull, who is also the creator of the hit series “Moving”, which is also the most popular Korean original series to be released on Disney+ and Hulu.
Now, Kangfull can also add “Light Shop” to his successful résumé as, according to Variety, the show has become the biggest Korean original premiere of 2024 within the first twelve days of streaming and also ranks as the second-largest Korean series debut ever on the platform globally, after “Moving.”
The success of both “Moving” and “Light Shop” highlights why Disney is investing in its Korean original content, as currently, nine out of the top fifteen best-performing international originals have come out of Korea.
Recently, during an APAC showcase event in Singapore, Carol Choi, executive VP of original content strategy at The Walt Disney Company Asia Pacific, said:
“Stories produced in Asia Pacific have become a staple in general entertainment consumption – they are world-class productions, with growing global resonance and deep passionate fandoms worldwide. Our content strategy remains focused on curating premium, talent-driven originals from the region – quality, best-in-class tentpole titles with some of the very top names in entertainment.”
Roger’s Take: Korean originals seem to be extremely popular, not just in their native country but globally, as audiences become more accustomed to watching shows that aren’t just made in the US. It would certainly be interesting to see what other international originals are popular right now. Still, with Disney focusing on Korean dramas, Japanese Anime, and European drama shows, it does seem Disney has found its groove in making international content while offering all subscribers something different.
You can watch every episode of “Light Shop” on Hulu and Hulu On Disney+ in the United States and on Disney+ internationally.
