Krysten Ritter Talks Returning As Jessica Jones In Upcoming Marvel Disney+ Series
Next March, the hit series, “Daredevil: Born Again”, returns for its second season, which will see Daredevil once again face off with the Kingpin, who is also the Mayor of New York.
In the first season, which was released on Disney+ earlier this year, we saw Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox), a blind lawyer with heightened abilities, fighting for justice through his bustling law firm, while former mob boss Wilson Fisk (Vincent D’Onofrio) pursues his own political endeavours in New York. When their past identities begin to emerge, both men find themselves on an inevitable collision course.
During the production of the first season, there were some major changes in the creative process, with Marvel deciding to embrace the former Netflix Original series as canon within the MCU, rather than trying to make this new series a little different and use the multiverse as the excuse as to why things aren’t exactly the same.
This resulted in many of the other actors from the Netflix shows, such as Deborah Ann Woll, Elden Henson, and Jon Bernthal, returning to our screens. This led to much speculation that other characters, such as Iron Fist, Luke Cage and Jessica Jones, could also return in the future, especially when Krysten Ritter, who played Jessica Jones, teased on social media an image of her in her Jessica Jones t-shirt, only for it to be revealed that she was in New York to film the new “Dexter” series
However, at the Upfront events in May, Disney finally confirmed that Krysten Ritter would be returning in the second season as Jessica Jones and during a recent appearance at the San Diego Comic-Con, she revealed some details on her return. When asked about jumping back into the character, told Deadline:
“You play a character for this long, and Michael and I connected over this, too. Those characters that get into your body and your cells, and how slipping back into it was really easy, exciting, and fun. And it felt like everybody was thrilled that Jessica was back. Now, there’s going to be more layers to her and more to play for me, and that’s exciting to revisit a character that I worked so hard on that I love so much and so do the fans. She’s just one of the coolest characters ever.”
She also opened up about how they tried to keep things quiet for fans, to make a bigger shock when it was confirmed:
“Well, I obviously knew all of the things that were happening. When I landed in New York, everybody was like, ‘She’s here for Daredevil.’ Then it was announced that I was in Dexter, so it was a fun way to throw everybody off the track. We really wanted to preserve the Jessica Jones announcement for an event like the Upfronts. Marvel wanted to find the right time to announce so it could be celebratory and not have it leak, so it’s not something on the internet that comes and goes. We pulled it off, and that was exciting,”
As part of her return as Jessica Jones, she revealed that she had to once again work on her fitness to get her “Jessica Jones” muscles back, and it’ll be interesting to see how her return to our screens is going to work out.
Marvel has undergone significant changes in the past few years, shifting away from direct connections between its television shows and movies, and scaling back its production output. With a focus on making its television shows more like traditional series, with multiple seasons and lower budgets than huge epic shows like “Secret Invasion” or “Loki”.
It seems Marvel has done a 180 and come back to the idea of using the “Defender” characters as the television side of Marvel, since they are street-level superheroes, that work better being slightly separated from the overall larger MCU universe.
You can catch both seasons of “Jessica Jones”, along with “The Defenders” and “Daredevil: Born Again” on Disney+.
