Jon Watts Signs New Overall Deal With Walt Disney Studios
Just ahead of the release of the brand new Disney+ series “Star Wars: Skeleton Crew,” Jon Watts, his production company Freshman Year, and producer Dianne McGunigle have signed a new first-look feature deal with Walt Disney Studios.
Under this deal, Jon Watts will direct feature-length projects for Disney live-action and 20th Century Studios and have the option to produce them.
Jon has previously directed the last three “Spider-Man” films, “Homecoming”, “Far From Home” and “No Way Home”. He is also the writer, producer and writer of the upcoming Apple TV+ movie, “Wolfs”, which stars George Clooney and Brad Pitt.
He has also worked with Disney as a producer on the FX series, “The Old Man”, and the upcoming Disney+ series, “Skeleton Crew”.
In a statement to Deadline, David Greenbaum, president, Disney Live Action and 20th Century Studios, said:
“Jon Watts is a truly gifted filmmaker who brings spectacle, humor and heart to whatever he does. I am so excited to work with him and his producing partner Dianne McGunigle on a slate of upcoming projects for Disney and 20th.”
Jon Watts added:
“I’ve already had an incredible experience working with Alan Bergman, Kathy Kennedy, Kevin Feige and the rest of the Disney team and I’m thrilled to now be partnering with the brilliantly creative David Greenbaum. David has exceptional taste and deep filmmaking knowledge and I’m excited to work with him and his team to create memorable, director-driven theatrical experiences.”
Roger’s Take: Considering how successful the recent “Spider-Man” trilogy was at the box office and how Jon has worked with Disney on multiple projects like “Skeleton Crew” and “The Old Man”, Disney must have lots of faith in his work and want to lock him in for future projects and maybe hopefully something Marvel related.
