Disney has added two classic game shows to its streaming line up, as Sony Pictures Television has announced a new multi-year, co-exclusive, national next-day streaming licensing deals with Peacock, Hulu, and Hulu on Disney+ in the United States, for the iconic syndicated game shows “Jeopardy!” and “Wheel of Fortune”.

“Jeopardy!” is America’s Favourite Quiz Show and is the top-rated quiz show on television. “Jeopardy!” is produced by Sony Pictures Television, a Sony Pictures Entertainment Company, and executive-produced by Michael Davies.

Wheel of Fortune” is one of the most successful shows in history. Ryan Seacrest hosts the iconic game show as host alongside the incomparable Vanna White. “Wheel of Fortune” is produced by Sony Pictures Television, a Sony Pictures Entertainment Company, and executive-produced by Bellamie Blackstone.

This is the first time that in-season syndicated episodes will be available on national streaming platforms. These exciting new strategic partnerships will also include access to library episodes of the shows, enhancing the viewing experience for audiences.

These deals will expand “Jeopardy!” and “Wheel of Fortune’s” reach to a new generation of viewers while ensuring that existing fans can enjoy their favourite shows with greater accessibility, deepening the fandom overall for these formidable franchises.  Disney also has the US rights for the celebrity versions of those shows, which air on ABC and Hulu/Hulu On Disney+.

Keith Le Goy, Chairman of Sony Pictures Television, said in a statement:

“We are thrilled to bring America’s favorite game shows to an even wider audience on Hulu, Hulu on Disney+, and Peacock.  Jeopardy! and Wheel of Fortune are two of the most successful game shows in television history and we look forward to giving fans the best possible streaming access to our shows this fall.”

Currently, Sony Television is in a legal battle with Paramount’s CBS over the linear distribution rights of both “Jeopardy!” and “Wheel of Fortune.” CBS has recently obtained a judge’s order to continue broadcasting the shows as the court case proceeds.  However, this new streaming deal falls outside of that court ruling, and it also explains why Paramount+ was excluded from the agreement.

The shows will begin streaming this September with the launch of “Jeopardy!” and “Wheel of Fortune’s” new seasons in syndication, Season 42 and Season 43, respectively.

Roger’s Take: As more and more people move from linear to streaming, getting access to two of the most popular game shows is a great win for Disney, as it just builds out its library even more, while paying less since it’s a non-exclusive deal.  It’ll also be easier for fans of the show to continue watching the show, and it might be one of those last reasons why some older television viewers still have cable, so it could help speed up more cord-cutting.
