Disney has announced that the Japanese original series, “Gannibal”, will be returning for a second season.   The series will see Yagira Yuya returning in the main role of police officer, Awaga. Also returning to their roles from the first season, are Kasamatsu Sho and Yoshioka Riho

The series tells the story of what happens after causing a major incident, police officer Daigo Agawa takes his wife Yuki and daughter Mashiro to live in the remote mountain village of Kuge. Despite seeming a perfect place to recover from the ordeal, a missing persons case remains unsolved of the previous officer posted there. The village thrives on forestry, with residents making their living from cypress timber. In charge of this industry’s operations is the Goto family, who own most of the village. One day, a body of an old woman is found on the mountain. The Goto family posits that it was a bear attack, but Daigo notices a human bite mark on the body and begins to suspect something is not quite right with the village.

Recently, Yagira Yuya was nominated in the Best Actor category at the Busan International Film Festival’s Asia Contents Awards & Global OTT Awards.  “Gannibal” is the most-watched Japanese Disney+ Original in Japan in the first month since its premiere.

The creative team behind the show including the screenwriter Oe Takamasa, director Katayama Shinzo; and producer Yamamoto Teruhisa, are also returning for the second season.

Disney said in a statement:

“Thrown into a hostile environment with suspense around every corner, season one took audiences on an emotional rollercoaster before leaving them on a heart-stopping cliffhanger.  In season two, audiences will get to uncover more of the village’s horrifying secrets and discover if Agawa has what it takes to escape the impossible and bring the nefarious Goto family to justice.”

The first season of “Gannibal” is available to stream now on Hulu in the United States and on Disney+ around the world.
