Hulu’s “Deli Boys” Cancelled After Two Seasons
Earlier this year, Disney released the second season of the Onyx Collective’s latest comedy series, “Deli Boys” on Hulu and Disney+ around the world.
The show tells the story of what happens when a pair of pampered Pakistani American brothers lose everything when their convenience store magnate father suddenly dies and are forced to reckon with their Baba’s secret life of crime as they attempt to take up his mantle in the underworld.
Unfortunately, Deadline has revealed that the show has been cancelled after two seasons and won’t be returning for a third season. The reason for the cancellation was apparently due to low viewership numbers. The second season saw a number of guest stars, including Kumail Nanjiani nd Lilly Singh, appear in the show to try to improve the number of people watching it, but it sadly didn’t work.
The series starred Asif Ali, Saagar Shaikh, and Poorna Jagannathan, with SNL comedy legend Fred Armisen. Abdullah Saeed created the half-hour series, and Jenni Konner and Nora Silver developed it under Jenni Konner Productions. Michelle Nader serves as showrunner and is an executive producer alongside Saeed, Konner and Silver. The series hails from Onyx Collective and is produced by 20th Television.
Both seasons of “Deli Boys” are available to stream now on Hulu and Hulu On Disney+ in the United States and on Disney+ internationally. As with any show that’s been cancelled, I would recommend checking it out sooner rather than later if you haven’t already done so, or haven’t gotten around to finishing it, since Disney often removes cancelled shows from Hulu and Disney+.
Roger’s Take: This cancellation didn’t come as a huge surprise, since it never seemed to make much buzz when either season came out, either through social media or in terms of the Nielsen streaming charts. Comedy shows continue to struggle to get audiences on streaming services, often because they don’t run long enough, like the traditional sitcom, to build an audience; plus, Disney didn’t seem to spend much money promoting the show.
