Last year, Disney’s Onyx Collective released a brand new comedy series called “How To Die Alone” on Hulu and Hulu On Disney+ in the United States and on Disney+ internationally.

“How to Die Alone” follows Mel, a broke, fat, Black JFK airport employee who’s never been in love and forgotten how to dream, until an accidental brush with death catapults her on a journey to finally take flight and start living by any means necessary.

The show has been produced by ABC Signature in association with Big Hattie Productions. The show was created by Natasha Rothwell, who was also a co-showrunner and executive producer along with Vera Santamaria. Desiree Akhavan serves as an executive producer.

The creator has taken to social media to confirm that the show has been cancelled after one season:

This is hard to comprehend… My heart is aches for the incredible cast, crew and writers who gave their all to tell this story. I’m so grateful to have had this opportunity, and appreciate all of the love and support given to me and the show. Now, my prayer is that this news will be but a comma in the HTDA story, not a period. Onward.

She also spoke to Variety about the cancellation, saying that she is “shocked, heartbroken, and frankly baffled.”

Apparently, the show’s viewership wasn’t good enough to renew it, though Natasha did say that it was “an undeniable critical, creative, and award-winning success.

Natasha also stated that she is shopping the show around to other networks and stated that:

“Representation isn’t just about visibility — it’s about ensuring that our stories, our existence and our cultural contributions are not erased.”

“How to Die Alone” is available to stream now on Hulu and Hulu On Disney+ in the United States and on Disney+ internationally. As with other recent shows that have been cancelled after one season, I’d recommend watching it as soon as possible since Disney does regularly remove cancelled shows to save money.

Roger’s Take: Unfortunately, with shows that don’t pull in enough viewers, Disney is unlikely to continue making it, especially as it cuts costs and is looking to create shows that reach a bigger audience.  With the current political climate changing, I doubt any other platforms will be looking to pick up a show that has already been proven to be a failure.
