In the past few months, we’ve started to see more Disney+ Hotstar Originals from Malaysia and Indonesia released globally on Disney+. And it looks like we might start seeing some Indian Hotstar Specials beginning to roll out to more countries.
Recently, Disney has announced a number of Indian Hotstar Specials, including movies and shows such as “The Night Manager”, “Gulmohar”, “Hansikas Love Shaad Drama”, “Bheeshma”, “Sita Raman”, “Cuttputli”, “Aarya”, and “Koffee With Karan”, will be coming to Disney+ in South Africa on Thursday 23rd March 2023.
As Disney+ has continued to grow its subscribers, it has created lots of new local original programming to appeal to a local audience, but with Disney reorganising its entertainment division to become more profitable, one of the things that have been changing is how the international division works, especially with regard to original content. The studios now have more control over what they make and where it is released.
It’s unknown if this rollout of Indian Hotstar Specials will spread everywhere, especially as Hotstar content goes to Hulu in the United States and Hotstar is still operating as a separate streaming service in some countries, such as Canada and the United Kingdom. Though if Disney wanted to cut costs, merging Hotstar with Disney+ in the UK and Canada, could make sense.
Disney CEO Bob Iger has previously spoken about there being an imbalance in the amount of international content and wanting more global releases, so utlitising some of the biggest shows and films from India does make sense.
