“Good Trouble” Cancelled After 5 Seasons
Just before the return of the second half of the fifth season of “Good Trouble” in the new year, it was revealed by Hollywood Reporter that after five seasons, the hit drama series has been cancelled.
“Good Trouble” follows the residents of Downtown Los Angeles’ The Coterie as they juggle career, love, and friendship and learn that standing up for what you believe in requires making a little noise and getting into trouble.
Apparently, executives had wanted the show to return for another season, but they couldn’t justify the costs of doing so due to lower ratings. Also, shows generally become more expensive to make as they go into later seasons. Disney is also going through a major cost-cutting sweep, to reduce the amount of general entertainment content it creates.
The good news is that while production on the fifth season has already been completed before the actors’ strike, Disney will film some additional scenes for the supersized finale that will properly wrap up the series rather than just leave it open.
There are also many questioning the future of Freeform since the channel was dropped from the Spectrum cable bundle, reducing the reach of the channel, and it is expected other cable platforms will also be looking to drop less popular channels, in exchange for access to the ad-supported version of Disney+.
The cancellation of “Good Trouble” follows the cancellation of “Cruel Summer” and “Grown-ish“, which now leaves Freeform without any scripted content, once both “Good Trouble” and “Grown-ish” wrap up next year.
“Good Trouble” stars Maia Mitchell, Cierra Ramirez, Tommy Martinez, Emma Hunton, Sherry Cola, Zuri Adele, Beau Mirchoff and Josh Pence.
The series was created by Joanna Johnson, Peter Paige and Bradley Bredeweg. Johnson serves as executive producer along with Greg Gugliotta, Chris Sacani, Jennifer Lopez, Benny Medina, Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas, Maia Mitchell, and Cierra Ramirez.
The previous seasons of “Good Trouble” are now available to stream on Hulu and Hulu On Disney+ in the United States. The show is also available to stream on Disney+ internationally.
“Good Trouble” returns on Freeform with new episodes on January 2nd 2024, with episodes available the next day on Hulu and Hulu On Disney+.
