After two seasons, it’s been revealed that FX’s drama series, “The Old Man”, won’t be returning for a third season, following lacklustre viewing numbers for the latest season, which dropped onto FX, Hulu and Disney+ in September.

“The Old Man” stars Jeff Bridges and John Lithgow, and it centers on Dan Chase who absconded from the CIA decades ago and has been living off the grid since. When an assassin arrives and tries to take Chase out, the old operative learns that to ensure his future he must reconcile his past. The FBI’s Assistant Director for Counterintelligence is called to hunt Chase down because of his complicated past with the rogue fugitive.

Unfortunately, the series has experienced major production issues, including filming on the first season being delayed due to the lockdowns of the pandemic and Jeff Bridges’ cancer treatment. The second season was impacted by the Hollywood strikes, resulting in the series taking over five years to create just 15 episodes.

When the first season was released in June 2022, it made a big impact by becoming the most-watched cable series premiere since January 2021 and becoming the most-watched FX series debut on Hulu in its opening weekend. The series was also released internationally as a Star Original on Disney+.

Due to this success, a second season was quickly greenlit, but when it was released earlier this year, it failed to maintain the same viewership, which, according to Deadline, was a major reason for the cancellation.

“The Old Man” was created for television by Jonathan E. Steinberg & Robert Levine, who are also executive producers with Warren Littlefield, Dan Shotz, Jeff Bridges, David Schiff and Jon Watts. The series is produced by 20th Television in association with The Littlefield Company.

Both seasons of “The Old Man” are available to stream now on Hulu and Hulu On Disney+ in the United States and on Disney+ around the world.

Roger’s Take: Unfortunately, I’m not surprised by this cancellation, as while I loved the first season, I’ve only seen a few episodes of the second season and just drifted off, highlighting perfectly why FX has pulled the plug since I can’t have been the only one. The first season was excellent, but this is a show that unfortunately got hit by multiple delays and having years between seasons doesn’t help keep a show in the mindset of viewers. Throw in that both Jeff Bridges and John Lithgow are both in their late 70s, this will likely also be a factor in the decision process.
