Disney’s FX has closed a deal to develop a new six-episode limited series based on Blitz Bazawule’s upcoming novel, “The Scene Of Burnt Flowers”.

The book tells the story of Melvin and Bernadette, a Black couple fleeing persecution in 1960s America. They seek asylum in Ghana, where they meet charismatic Ghanaian musician Kwesi, who they lean on to preserve their freedom. Abdul-Mateen would play Kwesi in the series, which intertwines the dark chapters of history with a magical realist lens, elevating the story to an otherworldly experience.  The novel is due to be released on June 28th.

Blitz Bazawule will be writing, directing and producing the series under his Inward Gaze production company.    He has previously worked on the Disney+ Original, “Black Is King”.

This new series will star Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, who will also be an executive producer under his production shingle House Eleven10 alongside Macro Television Studios.   Charles D. King, Marta Fernandez and Ahmadou Seck will also be executive producers for Macro Television Studios, as will Gaby Mena and Natalia Williams of M88.

Yahya Abdul-Mateen II has recently starred in “The Trial of the Chicago 7”, “Watchmen” and will be starring in the upcoming film, “Ambulance”.

No release details have been announced for this series, but we should expect to see the series available on Hulu in the United States and on Disney+ internationally as a Star Original.
